Chapter 4 - The Clean Sweep

Before Brent could even process the words, a silver Mercedes sedan pulled up to the gate from the opposite direction.

Jennifer, my attorney, stepped out of the vehicle. She looked immaculate in a tailored charcoal pantsuit, holding a leather briefcase. Beside her walked two county sheriff's deputies, their hands resting casually on their utility belts.

"Brent," Jennifer said, her voice dripping with professional satisfaction. "Diane. Karen. Nice of you to join us."

"Jennifer!" Brent stormed over to the iron bars of the gate, his face turning an ugly shade of purple. "What is this game? Where is Tessa? Tell her to stop this ridiculous stunt and open the door!"

"Tessa isn't here, Brent," Jennifer said, pulling a stack of legal documents from her briefcase and sliding them through the iron bars. "But she did leave these for you. This is a copy of the finalized property deed showing the transfer of ownership to Apex Holdings. And this..." She slid a second, thicker envelope through. "...is your copy of the divorce petition and an emergency ex-parte restraining order protecting Tessa and Ivy."

Brent grabbed the papers, his hands shaking as his eyes scanned the text. "She sold the house? She can't sell the house! It's my home! We're married!"

"You signed a prenuptial agreement, Brent," Jennifer reminded him, her voice raising enough for his mother and sister to hear. "The property was purchased solely with Tessa's pre-marital assets, and the mortgage was fully paid off by her. Under Colorado law, she had the absolute right to liquidate her separate property without your consent. And as of this morning, Apex Holdings has initiated a commercial eviction protocol."

"My clothes! My designer suits!" Karen shrieked from the backseat, running up to the gate. "My photos on the staircase! All our family heirlooms!"

"All personal belongings left inside the residence have been cataloged by an independent third party," Jennifer said, pointing down the road.

Around the corner, a massive, orange U-Haul truck slowly rolled into view, pulling up behind Brent's SUV.

"Tessa was generous enough to pay for a one-month rental of a local self-storage unit," Jennifer smiled, handing Karen a brass key. "Your things have already been packed and loaded. You can find your family photos, your wardrobe, and your mother's holiday decorations in Unit 402. I suggest you go there now. The deputies here are prepared to arrest you for criminal trespass if you remain on this street for another three minutes."

Diane looked at the U-Haul, then at her son, her face pale with humiliation. "Brent... do something! Tell them they can't do this!"

But Brent couldn't speak. He looked through the iron gates at the mansion he had boasted about to his clients, his partners, and his friends. He realized, with absolute, crushing certainty, that he had never owned a single brick of it.
