Chapter 2 - The Digital Signature in the Passenger Seat

The headlights of Molly’s SUV cut through the sheets of cold Colorado rain, illuminating the gravel driveway of the estate. The car hadn't even come to a complete stop before Molly threw the door open, rushing toward me with a thick wool blanket in her hands.

Without a word, she wrapped the blanket around me and Ivy, shielding my tiny, fragile daughter from the freezing wind. She guided us gently into the warm, heated cabin of her car, shutting the door against the storm.

"I've got you, Tess," Molly whispered, her eyes shining with a mix of fierce protectiveness and unshed tears. She immediately took Ivy, cradling her close to make sure she was dry. "I've got both of you. You're safe."

I leaned my head against the leather headrest, my body trembling with a combination of postpartum exhaustion and pure, icy focus. I pulled out my phone. The screen lit up with a notification from Jennifer.

Attached was a contract of sale.

PROPERTY PURCHASE AGREEMENT: 1142 REDWOOD CREST DRIVE Seller: Tessa Montgomery (Sole Owner) Buyer: Apex Holdings LLC (Cash Offer) Purchase Price: $8.2 Million (As-Is, 24-Hour Expedited Closing)

"Molly," I said, my voice hoarse but steady. "Pass me the stylus from your glove box."

Molly looked up from Ivy, her eyes widening. "Tessa, are you sure? You built that place. You designed every single archway."

"I built a house, Molly," I said, taking the stylus. "Brent and his mother turned it into a prison. I’m not going back there to fight them for the right to breathe my own air. Let them have the walls. Let's see how they handle the new landlord."

With a quick, fluid motion of my thumb, I digitally signed the deed transfer, the bill of sale, and the expedited closing disclosure.

At exactly 7:42 p.m., while my husband was likely ordering top-shelf champagne at a beachside lounge in Miami on a credit card he didn't realize was already canceled, the ownership of 1142 Redwood Crest Drive legally transferred to a commercial real estate conglomerate specializing in high-profile luxury rentals.

I sent the signed documents back to Jennifer.

Two minutes later, my phone buzzed with a confirmation text from my bank:

Wire transfer pending: $8,200,000.00.

"It's done," I said, looking out the fogged window at the distant, glowing mansion. "Let's go home, Molly."
