Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The rain pelted my face like needles as I rounded the circular driveway near the east gate.

Patricia was stumbling through the mud, clutching her shattered jaw, her leather coat soaked through as she tried to reach the black sedan waiting outside the perimeter fence.

"PATRICIA!" my voice boomed across the storm like a thunderclap.

She froze, turning around in absolute terror as she saw me advancing through the rain—a demon emerging from the dark, completely unharmed, eyes burning with a lethal vengeance.

She reached for a small backup knife in her pocket, her hands shaking violently. "Ethan... please... we can make a deal... O'Malley forced me... he threatened my family—"

"Liar," I said flatly, stopping ten feet away from her.

I didn't raise my gun. I didn't need to. Dominic’s team had already surrounded the sedan outside the gate, dragging O'Malley’s getaway driver onto the pavement and securing the area.

"You targeted my home," I said, my voice eerily calm despite the storm raging around us. "You targeted my daughters. And you tried to murder the woman who kept them alive."

Patricia fell to her knees in the mud, sobbing, her refined high-society mask completely destroyed, leaving behind nothing but a pathetic, desperate coward.

"Please, Ethan..." she wept, holding up her muddy hands. "Don't kill me... I'll give you O'Malley’s offshore accounts... I'll give you everything..."

"I don't need your accounts, Patricia," I said, stepping closer and looking down at her with cold disgust. "I have everything I need right here."

I gestured to Marcus, who stepped up beside me with heavy zip-ties.

"Take her to the federal building downtown," I instructed Marcus quietly. "Hand her over to the FBI field office along with the encrypted hard drives from my study. Tell them Patricia Hale is the primary coordinator for the New Orleans syndicate's money laundering operations in Texas."

Patricia gasped, looking up in sheer horror. "The feds?! Ethan, if you put me in federal prison, O'Malley will have me killed!"

"Then you better hope you like solitary confinement," I replied coldly, turning my back on her as Marcus dragged her to her feet and shoved her into the back of a security vehicle.

I walked back toward the mansion.

The fire department and my private security cleanup crews were already arriving, clearing the shattered glass and securing the breached entryway. But I didn't care about the damage to the house. Money could rebuild marble floors and oak doors in a week.

I ran through the ruined foyer and straight down the hall to the safe room.

The heavy steel door was open. Dominic was standing outside, giving me a reassuring nod as I rushed inside.

In the center of the reinforced room, sitting on a soft leather sofa, was Clara.

Her arm was wrapped in a white bandage where Marcus had treated the glass cut, but her focus was entirely on Avery and Sophie. She had wrapped them both in a warm fleece blanket and was softly singing a quiet lullaby, holding them tight against her chest while they rested their tear-stained faces against her shoulder.

When I stepped into the room, Avery looked up.

"Daddy!" she sobbed, reaching her small arms out toward me.

I dropped to my knees in front of the sofa, pulling both of my daughters into my arms, holding them so tightly I could feel their little hearts beating against my chest.

"I'm here, baby," I choked out, tears finally breaking through my rugged defense and streaming down my face. "Daddy’s right here. You're safe. I promise you, you're safe."

Sophie pulled back slightly, looking at me with her bright brown eyes, then pointed at Clara. "Clara threw a statue, Daddy! She was like a superhero!"

A faint, breathless laugh escaped my lips. I looked up at Clara.

She was sitting there, pale, exhausted, her uniform torn and stained with dust, but looking at my daughters with so much fierce, unconditional love that it took my breath away.

"A superhero," I agreed softly, reaching out and placing my hand over Clara’s trembling hand resting on the sofa. "That's exactly what she is."

Clara looked at me, her green eyes filling with tears as she felt the warmth of my hand, a tender, silent understanding passing between us in the quiet sanctuary of the room.
