Chapter 2 - The Anaconda in Silk

By four o'clock that afternoon, the rain had begun to fall over Houston, hammering against the high tinted windows of my private study on the third floor.

I sat behind my massive mahogany desk, a glass of unopened bourbon resting beside a thick leather binder. On the laptop screen in front of me was a comprehensive financial ledger detailing every wire transfer, property record, and corporate affiliation tied to Patricia Hale over the last three years.

Sitting across from me was Dominic Rossi, my second-in-command for the syndicate's logistics operations. Built like a brick wall with a scar running through his left eyebrow, Dominic was the man who handled problems that couldn't be resolved in a court of law.

"You were right to abort the Chicago trip, Boss," Dominic said quietly, tossing a manila folder onto my desk. "Patricia wasn't just trying to get rid of the maid. She was clearing the board."

I pulled the folder toward me and flipped it open. Inside were high-resolution surveillance photographs of Patricia meeting with a tall, thin man in a tailored grey suit at a private country club in The Woodlands.

"Who is he?" I asked, my eyes narrowing at the man's face.

"Julian Vance," Dominic replied, his voice dark. "He’s the primary legal counsel for the O'Malley syndicate out of New Orleans. The same crew that’s been trying to muscle into our shipping terminals at the Port of Houston for eighteen months."

My blood ran cold. "Patricia was talking to O'Malley's attorney?"

"It gets worse," Dominic said, leaning forward. "Three weeks ago, Patricia opened an offshore trust in the Cayman Islands under a shell company called 'Blue Horizon LLC.' The primary benefactor of that trust is Patricia... but the secondary signatories are Julian Vance and a former judge who handles probate courts in Harris County."

I stared at the documents, the pieces of the puzzle locking together with terrifying clarity.

Patricia hadn't stepped into my life to be a supportive partner or a mother figure to my grieving daughters. She was an asset sent by my worst rivals. Her objective wasn't just to marry into my wealth—it was to dismantle my inner circle, isolate me from anyone who actually cared about my family, and eventually position herself as the legal guardian of Avery and Sophie in the event of my "unfortunate" death.

And Clara Bennett had been standing directly in her way.

Clara wasn't a mobster. She had no political power, no weapons, and no knowledge of my criminal empire. But she possessed something far more dangerous to a predator like Patricia: absolute, unyielding devotion to my children. Clara watched the girls twenty-four hours a day. She noticed every strange car parked on the street, every change in staff, every odd detail.

If Patricia had attempted to poison me or manipulate my estate papers, Clara would have noticed the shift in household routine instantly.

"Patricia knew Clara was the anchor," I realized aloud, my fist clenching until my knuckles turned white. "If she removed Clara, my daughters would be surrounded entirely by staff paid for by Patricia’s offshore accounts. Mrs. Nolan... the new security guards at the perimeter... they were all hired on Patricia’s recommendation."

"Every single one of them," Dominic confirmed. "We checked the background files Patricia submitted for the new night staff. Three of the guards on the gate crew are former private contractors who used to work for O'Malley’s security firm in Louisiana."

A cold, lethal stillness settled over my study. The same stillness that came over me whenever an enemy crossed the line from business competition to personal threat.

"Where are those three guards right now?" I asked quietly.

"In the security barracks near the east gate," Dominic said. "They think they're working the night shift."

"Disarm them," I ordered flatly. "Take their phones, tie them up in the basement of the warehouse near Pier 42, and don't give them water until I get there. As for Mrs. Nolan... fire her immediately. Give her double severance, but have Marcus escort her to the city limits and ensure she never sets foot in Harris County again."

"Understood, Boss," Dominic said, standing up. "And Patricia?"

I stared out the window at the rain falling over my vast estate.

"Patricia thinks she played me," I murmured. "She thinks I fired Clara out of emotional instability. She doesn't know I caught onto the O'Malley connection yet. We play along for twenty-four hours. Let her think she’s winning."

"And the maid?" Dominic asked, pausing by the door. "Is she safe?"

I thought of Clara sitting on the floor of the playroom right now, patiently helping Avery trace the outline of a blue bunny while Sophie leaned against her knee.

"Clara Bennett is the most valuable person in this house," I replied softly. "Assign four of our most loyal men to her personal security. If a single hair on her head is harmed, I will personally burn New Orleans to the ground."
