Chapter 4 - The Serpent Strikes

By Friday evening, the trap was set.

The atmosphere in Houston was thick with humidity and tension. Through my intelligence network, I had confirmed that the O'Malley syndicate was planning a coordinated hit on my logistics hub at Pier 42 at midnight, believing that I was distracted by internal household drama and the fallout from firing Patricia.

They thought I was weak. They thought I was spiraling.

They were about to learn how wrong they were.

At 7:00 PM, I stood in the grand foyer of my mansion, adjusting the cuffs of my dark suit jacket. Dominic stood beside me, double-checking his sidearm, while six of my elite security guards waited in idling SUVs outside the front entrance.

Clara walked out from the living room, holding Avery’s stuffed giraffe and a small tray of tea. When she saw the armed men standing in the foyer, she stopped dead in her tracks, her face draining of color.

"Mr. Whitaker?" she asked, her voice tight with worry. "Is something happening?"

I walked over to her, stepping away from my men so we could speak privately.

"I have to handle a business matter tonight, Clara," I said, keeping my tone calm and reassuring. "It might take a few hours."

Clara looked at the visible imprint of the shoulder holster beneath my jacket. She wasn't foolish; she knew who I was. She knew that Ethan Whitaker wasn't just a wealthy businessman. But for six months, she had deliberately chosen to ignore the dark rumors surrounding my name for the sake of my daughters.

"Are you going to be in danger?" she asked quietly, her green eyes searching my face with genuine concern that surprised me.

"No," I replied smoothly. "Just cleaning up a bad investment. But while I'm gone, I need you to do something for me."

"Anything," she answered without hesitation.

"Take Avery and Sophie to the safe room behind the study," I instructed, leaning in closer. "Marcus will be standing outside the door. Nobody enters that room except you, the girls, and Marcus. Do you understand?"

Clara nodded slowly, her knuckles whitening on the tray. "I understand. I’ll keep them safe."

"I know you will," I said softly, reaching out and gently touching her arm. "That's why I can leave."

I turned toward the door, but before I could step out into the rain, the heavy glass side windows of the foyer shattered into a shower of lethal fragments.

CRASH!

Automatic gunfire erupted from the front drive, the deafening blasts echoing through the vaulted marble halls of the estate.

"GET DOWN!" Dominic roared, tackling Marcus to the floor as bullets tore through the front doors, shredding the wooden paneling and smashing the crystal chandelier above into a million glittering pieces.

Instinct took over. I drew my heavy custom pistol from beneath my coat, spinning around to cover Clara.

Clara had thrown herself over Avery and Sophie—who had just run out from the playroom—shielding both girls with her own body on the marble floor as plaster rained down around them like snow.

"DOMINIC! COVER THE STAIRS!" I shouted, firing three rapid shots through the shattered front window, dropping an attacker in tactical gear who was attempting to breach the threshold.

"THEY CAME THROUGH THE WEST GATE!" Marcus yelled, firing over the flipped oak table in the dining room. "IT’S O'MALLEY’S CREW! THEY HAVE HEAVY AUTOMATICS!"

Sirens began wailing across the estate as the automatic lockdown system triggered, but the heavy steel shutters were jammed halfway down—someone had sabotaged the emergency power grid from the inside.

Through the smoke and dust filling the foyer, a tall figure stepped through the ruined front entrance, flanked by three heavily armed operatives.

It was Patricia Hale.

She was wearing a black leather coat, a silver-plated pistol in her hand, her face twisted into a terrifying, triumphant sneer as she looked at the carnage around us.

"Hello, Ethan," Patricia purred over the sound of crackling fires and alarm bells. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice you tracking my Cayman accounts?"

"Patricia," I growled, stepping in front of Clara and my daughters, my gun leveled directly at her chest. "You just committed suicide."

"Did I?" Patricia laughed bitterly. "Look around you, Ethan! Your perimeter is breached, your power is cut, and O'Malley’s men are taking Pier 42 as we speak! You thought you were the king of Texas, but you're just a broken widower who lost his edge the moment his wife died!"

Her eyes flicked past me to Clara, who was holding my weeping daughters beneath her body, her arm bleeding from a flying glass shard.

"And you," Patricia spat, her eyes flashing with pure hatred at Clara. "The pathetic little maid who thought she could take my place. I told Ethan you were a threat weeks ago. I should have shot you the day you stepped into this house!"

Patricia raised her weapon, aiming directly at Clara’s head.

"NO!" I roared.

Before Patricia could pull the trigger, Clara did something that defied all logic.

Instead of cowering, Clara scrambled to her feet, grabbed a heavy bronze statue from the side table, and hurled it with all her strength directly at Patricia’s face.

The heavy bronze struck Patricia squarely in the jaw with a sickening CRUNCH.

Patricia shrieked in pain, her shot flying wild and embedding itself into the ceiling as she stumbled backward, blood spurting from her broken nose.

"FIRE!" Dominic yelled.

My men unleashed a hail of gunfire into the foyer. I stepped forward, taking two precise shots that dropped the two enforcers standing beside Patricia.

Patricia dropped her gun, screaming in agony as she scrambled backward out the shattered front doors into the pouring rain, fleeing toward an idling getaway car at the end of the drive.

"STAY WITH THE GIRLS!" I ordered Dominic.

I sprinted out into the storm, my gun raised, chasing the bloody trail of Patricia Hale across the flooded lawn.
