CHAPTER 3: THE TRUTH COMES OUT

The video showed a private meeting.

Three weeks earlier.

Victoria sat across from two investors.

Everyone in the ballroom watched in stunned silence.

Then Victoria's recorded voice filled the speakers.

"If Emily gets the promotion, Sterling will eventually put her on the executive board."

A chill moved through the crowd.

Victoria continued.

"That cannot happen."

One investor frowned on the screen.

"Why?"

Victoria smiled.

The smile looked ugly now.

"Because Nathan trusts her."

The ballroom erupted.

Emily stared at the screen.

Nathan stared at Victoria.

And for the first time, she could not hide.

The recording continued.

"If she disappears, I become the obvious choice."

Every word struck like a hammer.

Promotion sabotage.

False rumors.

Professional attacks.

Months of manipulation.

The torn dress had never been the real goal.

It was merely the final humiliation.

The final attempt to destroy Emily publicly.

When the video ended, nobody spoke.

Nobody needed to.

The truth had spoken for itself.

Nathan walked toward the stage.

His voice carried across the room.

"Victoria Langford."

She looked up slowly.

"As of this moment, your employment with Sterling International is terminated."

Gasps filled the ballroom.

Nathan wasn't finished.

"Our legal department will also be reviewing every action discussed in those recordings."

Victoria's face collapsed.

Everything she had spent years building vanished in seconds.

Then Nathan turned toward Emily.

The room watched carefully.

He removed a small velvet box from his pocket.

Emily's eyes widened.

"Six months ago," Nathan said quietly, "I bought this because I believed one day I'd have the courage to ask."

Nobody breathed.

Nathan opened the box.

Inside was a diamond ring.

The entire ballroom froze.

"Emily..."

His voice softened.

"After everything you've endured tonight, I'm not asking for an answer."

He stepped closer.

"I'm asking whether you'll let me walk beside you when the world tries to tear you down."

Tears filled Emily's eyes.

Around them, the crowd stood silent.

No longer witnesses to humiliation.

Now witnesses to something entirely different.

And somewhere in the back of the ballroom, Victoria realized she had destroyed her own future trying to destroy someone else's.
