CHAPTER 1: THE MAN AT THE DOOR

The doors swung open.

Every head turned.

Every whisper died.

And the woman standing in the center of the ballroom forgot about the torn fabric hanging from her shoulders because suddenly everyone was looking past her.

Toward him.

Nathan Sterling.

CEO of Sterling International.

Billionaire.

Philanthropist.

The man whose name alone could silence an entire room.

He had arrived three days earlier from Singapore.

No one expected him at this charity gala.

Especially not now.

Especially not after what had just happened.

Nathan stopped in the doorway.

His gaze swept across the room.

Past the chandeliers.

Past the frozen guests.

Past the women who were still smiling nervously after ripping apart another woman's dress.

Then his eyes landed on her.

Emily.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

The silence became unbearable.

Nathan's expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Something worse.

Something cold.

The kind of anger that required no performance.

"What happened?"

His voice echoed through the room.

No one answered.

The woman responsible, Victoria Langford, straightened her shoulders.

"It was an accident."

The lie sounded weak the moment it left her mouth.

Nathan looked at the torn dress.

Then at Emily's trembling hands.

Then back at Victoria.

"An accident?"

Victoria swallowed.

The room seemed to shrink.

Nathan removed his suit jacket.

Without a word, he crossed the ballroom and gently draped it around Emily's shoulders.

The gesture was simple.

But the entire room understood what it meant.

He had chosen a side.

Publicly.

And that terrified the people who knew the truth.
