Chapter 4 - Betrayal at the Docks

The air inside the SUV froze. Clara held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her father remained utterly calm, his eyes fixed on the gun pointed at his chest.

"Marcus," Arthur said smoothly. "Fifteen years of loyalty traded for Sterling’s empty promises? Victor is bankrupt."

"Victor is bankrupt, but his offshore backers in Singapore are not," Marcus replied coldly. "They pay in gold, Mr. Vance. Now, both of you out of the car. Slowly."

At gunpoint, Arthur and Clara were marched up the private elevator into the waterfront penthouse. When the elevator doors opened, the scene was grim. Julian was pinned against the wall by two armed mercenaries, his face bruised. Victor Sterling stood at the far end of the room smoking a cigar, while his eldest son, Jonathan, had a thick bandage wrapped around his forearm—the mark of Clara's resistance.

"Ah, Arthur," Victor chuckled, taking a slow drag of his cigar. "Welcome to the real wedding reception."

"You're a pathetic coward, Victor," Clara spat, stepping in front of her father. "Attacking a woman from behind in the dark."

Jonathan stepped forward, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. "You had spirit, Clara. I'll give you that. That glass cut deep. But now, spirit won't save you."

Victor motioned to the table, where a tablet showed a pending wire transfer of all Vance family liquid assets, alongside documents relinquishing control of Vance Global. "Sign them, Arthur. Or watch your daughter die first, then your precious wife back at the estate—yes, Marcus's men are already surrounding your Upstate house."

Julian screamed, fighting against his captors. "Father, stop! This wasn't the plan! You said nobody would get hurt!"

"Silence, Julian!" Victor barked. "You were always too soft! A disappointment!"

Arthur slowly stepped toward the table. He picked up the stylus pen, looking down at the screen. "You think you've calculated everything, Victor. But you forgot one simple rule of business."

"And what is that?" Victor asked mockingly.

"Never trust a traitor," Arthur said quietly.

Suddenly, the lights in the entire building went black.

Gunfire erupted in the darkness, illuminated only by bright muzzle flashes. Red laser sights crisscrossed the room. Glass shattered as tactical operatives burst through the floor-to-ceiling skylights, rappelling down on heavy ropes.

Arthur had known about Marcus’s betrayal for months. The entire ride to the docks had been a setup—a decoy to draw Victor and Jonathan out into the open while Arthur's true loyal forces, led personally by Eleanor from the command bunker, executed a total siege.
