Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Sterling Dynasty

By 3:00 AM, the Vance estate in Upstate New York had been turned into a fortress. Private security officers armed with tactical gear patrolled the perimeter, while inside, Clara sat wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket, staring into the roaring fireplace. The blood had been washed away, but the trauma remained etched into her skin.

In the study, Arthur Vance was reviewing encrypted security footage on a wall of monitors. Eleanor sat beside Clara, holding a cup of tea, her face grim.

"The Sterling family isn't just broke, Clara," Arthur said, his voice echoing in the marble study as he beckoned his daughter and wife over. "They are bankrupt. Julian’s father, Victor Sterling, lost three billion dollars in offshore investments last month. This wedding wasn't a merger of love or legacy—it was a trap."

Arthur pressed play on a muted video feed. It showed the secluded garden section of the wedding venue. A tall figure in a dark suit had cornered Clara. A brief struggle ensued before Clara managed to cut the assailant's hand with a broken champagne glass and escape—leaving her dress covered in his blood.

"We ran the DNA from the blood on your dress," Arthur said, turning to Clara. "It doesn't belong to a street mugger or an unknown assassin. It belongs to Jonathan Sterling—Julian's older brother."

Clara gripped her teacup so hard her knuckles turned white. "Jonathan? But Julian swore his brother was in London managing their European assets!"

"Julian lied," Eleanor spat softly. "The Sterlings orchestrated this entire evening. They needed to force Clara into signing the trust fund transfer before the midnight deadline. When Clara refused to sign the financial papers before the reception ended, Jonathan took drastic measures."

Suddenly, the doors to the study burst open. Julian walked in, flanked by two of Arthur’s security guards. He looked frantic, his tie undone, his hair disheveled.

"Arthur! Eleanor! You have to listen to me!" Julian cried out, stepping toward Clara. "I didn't know Jonathan was in the city! I swear to God, Clara, I had no idea!"

"Lies!" Eleanor shouted, standing up. "You brought my daughter into a den of wolves!"

"I loved her!" Julian yelled back, tears streaming down his face. "I still love her! My father and brother... they threatened to ruin me if I didn't get Clara to sign the merger documents! But I never wanted her hurt! You have to believe me!"

Arthur slowly walked around his desk, standing face-to-face with his young son-in-law. "Your father thought he could bleed my family dry and intimidate my daughter. He forgot who I am." Arthur pulled out a sleek silver phone. "As of five minutes ago, Vance Global has initiated a hostile takeover of every Sterling asset across four continents. By sunrise, your family will not have a single dime to their name."

Julian collapsed to his knees, staring at Clara with desperate eyes. "Clara... please..."

Clara looked down at the man she had promised to love forever just six hours ago. She saw the love in his eyes, but she also saw the weakness that had nearly cost her life.

"Where is your brother, Julian?" Clara asked, her voice surprisingly steady, hardened by the night's horrors. "Where is Jonathan now?"

Julian swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "He's... he's at the harbor penthouse. With my father. They're waiting for the wire transfer... and if it doesn't go through, they have a contingency plan."
