Chapter 4 — The Audit of Cruelty

Maya slowly reached beneath the seam of her apron, unclipping the small, professional digital audio recorder she had worn for six hours. She pressed a button, stopping the recording, and handed it directly to the regional president of the Langford Hotel Group, who stood behind Ethan with a grim expression.
"Everything is on here, Marcus," Maya said calmly, her voice carrying an absolute, unshakable authority. "Six hours of audio. Miss Halloran threatening immigrant kitchen staff with visa cancellations if they report injuries. Documentation of vendor skimming, and the exact audio of her forcing staff to pay cash fees out of their tips just to keep their weekend shifts."
The regional president took the recorder as if it were a live grenade. "This is a catastrophe. Brooke, explain this immediately!"
Brooke was trembling so hard she could barely stand. She fell to her knees before Ethan and Maya, her hands clasped together in desperate plea. "Mrs. Hartwell! Please! I didn't know! The schedule had your name shortened! I was just trying to maintain back-of-house discipline! I swear, I care about this hotel!"
"You don't care about this hotel, Brooke. You care about the power it gave you to abuse people who couldn't fight back," Maya said, looking down at her with a profound, chilling indifference.
"You told me in the kitchen that a single broken porcelain plate cost more than I make in a week. You were right. But what you didn't realize is that my foundation owns the entire supply chain of this hotel network. And as of 9:00 p.m. tonight, your employment is terminated."
Ethan turned his gaze to Celeste Waverly, who was quietly trying to slip into the crowd toward the emergency exit.
"Don't move a single inch, Celeste," Ethan barked.
Celeste froze, turning slowly with a terrified, guilty smile. "Ethan... look, it was a misunderstanding. Brooke was the one running the kitchen. I was just trying to make sure the gala was perfect for your family."
"You knew exactly who she was, Celeste," Ethan said, his voice cutting through the room like iron.

"You've spent years envying Maya’s position at the foundation, and the moment you thought she was vulnerable, you weaponized your position to humiliate her in front of our staff. Effective immediately, the Hartwell Foundation is severing all contracts with your event management firm. We will ensure every charity in New York and Boston receives a copy of this evening's forensic report."
Celeste collapsed against a decorative pillar, her career completely dismantled in a matter of seconds.
