Chapter 3 — The Arrival of the King

Ethan Hartwell walked into the ballroom.
He didn't wear a standard tuxedo; his black suit was custom-tailored, stark and commanding, and his jaw was set in a hard, dangerous line. Flanked by the regional president of the Langford Hotel Group and two senior corporate attorneys carrying leather briefcases, Ethan’s presence instantly shifted the gravity of the room.
The guests rose to their feet, murmuring in excitement. The man whose family name was emblazoned on the charity banners, the man who owned the very land the hotel was built upon, had finally arrived.
Brooke Halloran’s face transformed in a fraction of a second. Her haughty, mocking sneer vanished, replaced by a wide, desperate smile of pure sycophancy. She pushed past Celeste, smoothing her blazer as she hurried toward Ethan.
"Mr. Hartwell! Welcome!" Brooke gasped, her voice practically dripping with artificial warmth. "We are so incredibly honored to host the Hartwell Children’s Fund Gala tonight. Everything is running perfectly. I’ve personally overseen every single detail of the VIP service."
Ethan didn't stop walking. He didn't look at Brooke. He didn't acknowledge her outstretched hand. His eyes were locked entirely on the front of the room, scanning the head table.
When he saw Maya standing there in her stained apron, her red hands clasped in front of her, his blue eyes grew entirely dark with a terrifying, protective rage.
He marched straight past Brooke, straight past the whispering city officials, until he stood directly in front of Maya.
The entire ballroom held its breath.
Ethan reached out, his large, warm hands gently taking Maya’s red, soap-burned fingers. He looked at the kitchen cap covering her hair, then down at the service apron tied around her waist.
"Maya," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion, carrying clearly through the silent hall. "Why are you wearing an apron? And why is the general manager of this hotel treating my wife like a servant?"
The word wife rippled through the ballroom like an electric shock.

Brooke Halloran stumbled back a step, her heel catching on the edge of a carpet runner. Her face drained of all color, turning a ghostly, horrific shade of white. She looked at Celeste, whose tablet dropped from her hands, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.
"W-Wife?" Brooke whispered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. "She’s... she’s Mrs. Hartwell?"
