Chapter 5 - The War at the Gala

The Annual Chicago Heritage Ball was the premier black-tie event of the autumn season—a glittering, high-stakes gathering of the city’s political, financial, and cultural elite held in the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel.
It was also the exact venue Richard Vance had chosen to celebrate his firm’s acquisition of a major municipal contract, surrounded by press reporters and influential city figures.
At 8:30 p.m., the grand double doors of the ballroom swung open, and the chatter of three hundred wealthy patrons fell into a stunned, sudden hush.
Elias Voss stepped into the room.
He looked every inch the ruthless, dark king of Chicago high finance, dressed in a midnight-blue velvet tuxedo that emphasized his broad shoulders and commanding stature.
But it was the woman on his arm that caused a wave of gasps to ripple through the crowd.
Zaria Monroe looked utterly breathtaking. She wore an emerald-green silk gazar gown that swept the marble floor, its elegant, structured bodice complementing her glowing skin and dark, regal curls styled in an intricate updo. Around her neck sat a vintage Cartier diamond necklace from the Voss family vault—a piece that hadn't been seen in public for thirty years.
She carried herself not as a terrified former waitress, but as a queen entering her own domain, her head held high, her eyes calm and confident.
Standing near the main champagne tower, Richard Vance froze, his glass stopping halfway to his mouth. His eyes bulged as he took in the sight of Zaria standing on the arm of his greatest rival, looking richer, more powerful, and more unassailable than any woman in his social circle.
Elias didn't rush toward Vance. He guided Zaria through the room with smooth, effortless grace, stopping to greet federal judges, bank presidents, and city council members who rushed over to pay their respects to the notoriously reclusive billionaire.
"Elias!" called out Mayor Thomas Higgins, stepping forward with a wide smile and an extended hand. "A rare pleasure! And who is this magnificent young lady?"
"Mayor Higgins," Elias said, shaking the man’s hand firmly. "May I introduce Zaria Monroe, the newly appointed Executive Trustee of the Voss Domestic Cultural Initiative, and the sole administrator of the Monroe Child Development Trust."
The Mayor’s eyes brightened with genuine interest. "Ah, yes! The ten-million-dollar trust announced in the financial papers this morning! Brilliant work, Miss Monroe. Chicago needs more private initiatives supporting young mothers and early childhood development."
"Thank you, Mr. Mayor," Zaria said smoothly, her voice warm, clear, and perfectly poised. "We believe that no child’s future should be held hostage by predatory interests."
From ten feet away, Richard Vance couldn't take it anymore. He slammed his champagne glass onto a waiter’s tray and pushed his way through the circle of dignitaries, his face flushed with purple rage.
"Elias!" Vance snarled, ignoring the presence of the Mayor and three federal prosecutors standing nearby. "What is the meaning of this circus? You think putting a diamond necklace on a common servant changes what she is?"
The surrounding conversation ceased instantly. Guests turned, sensing the explosive confrontation unfolding in the center of the ballroom.
Elias didn't flinch. He slowly turned to face Vance, stepping slightly in front of Zaria, shielding her with his massive frame.
"Careful, Richard," Elias said, his voice dangerously soft, yet carrying perfectly across the silent room. "Your blood pressure seems elevated. That can be dangerous for a man facing three simultaneous federal subpoenas."
Vance blinked, taking a half-step back. "What... what subpoenas?"
Right on cue, the grand doors of the ballroom opened once more. Two men in sharp dark suits holding federal badges walked straight into the room, accompanied by none other than Judge Eleanor Vance-Cross.
The lead agent walked directly up to Richard Vance.
"Richard Vance?" the agent asked loudly. "We have a warrant for your arrest issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, charging you with wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and tax evasion involving offshore trusts in the Bahamas."
Vance panicked, looking wildly around the room. "This is absurd! On whose authority?"
Judge Eleanor stepped forward, looking her brother dead in the eye with cold, absolute disapproval.
"On my authority, Richard," Eleanor said clearly. "Along with the complete internal financial ledgers provided to the Department of Justice by Mr. Elias Voss."
The room erupted into quiet, shocked murmurs as the federal agents clicked iron handcuffs around Richard Vance’s wrists.

As he was being led away in front of the city's entire business elite, Vance turned his head, locking eyes with Zaria one last time, his face twisted in defeat and despair.
Zaria didn't look away. She didn't flinch. She simply held Elias’s arm tighter, watching the man who had terrified her for months be dragged into the dark cold of the night.
