Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary on the Hill

Fifteen minutes later, a heavy, armored black Mercedes Maybach pulled out of the underground parking garage of the Pearl Room, slipping quietly into the heavy Chicago drizzle.

In the back seat, Zaria sat wrapped in a plush cashmere throw that Elias’s personal assistant had brought down from the penthouse. Theo was fast asleep in a top-of-the-line convertible car seat that Marcus had expertly secured into the leather upholstery within ten minutes of Elias’s order.

Beside her, Elias Voss sat quietly, reviewing documents on an iPad, his face illuminated by the cool blue light of the screen.

The silence between them was dense, heavy with a thousand unanswered questions.

"Mr. Voss," Zaria began, her voice barely louder than the hum of the luxury sedan’s engine as they swept past the glowing lights of the Magnificent Mile. "Why are you doing this? You don't know me. You don't owe me anything. You could have handed me over to Richard Vance and saved your business from his debt threats."

Elias didn't look up from his screen. "Richard Vance cannot destroy my business, Miss Monroe. He merely likes to pretend he can to satisfy his delicate ego."

"But he has power," she insisted, turning to look at his sharp profile. "He has lawyers, money, police chiefs on his payroll... he won't stop. He’s obsessed with taking Theo."

"Let him try," Elias said softly. He finally turned off the screen, turning his dark, intense gaze toward her. "Richard Vance represents everything I despise about this city. He believes that money grants him the right to own people, to tear mothers from their children, to treat human lives like line items on a balance sheet."

He leaned back against the leather headrest, looking out at the rain-streaked window.

"My estate in Lake Forest sits on forty acres of private land," Elias said quietly. "It is surrounded by a twelve-foot stone wall, monitored by twenty-four-hour private security personnel who answer only to Marcus, and operates under strict legal privacy covenants. You and Theo will live in the guest house on the north wing. You will have a guaranteed salary, private medical coverage, and a full-time nanny provided for Theo so you can resume your education."

Zaria felt a lump form in her throat so large she couldn't speak for several seconds. Tears filled her eyes, reflecting the passing streetlights.

"I can't accept that," she whispered, shaking her head. "It’s too much. I can't pay you back for something like that."

"I am not asking for repayment," Elias said sharply. "I am offering you protection. Whether you choose to accept the educational support or simply work as my household administrator is up to you. But as long as you are under my roof, Richard Vance cannot touch your son."

They drove in silence for another thirty minutes, leaving the bright neon grid of the city behind as they entered the winding, tree-lined avenues of Lake Forest. The rain had turned into a thick, low-lying fog that hung over the massive historic estates set far back from the road.

The Maybach slowed as it approached a set of massive, wrought-iron gates set into a high limestone wall. A security guard in a dark uniform stepped out of a stone gatehouse, recognized the vehicle, typed a code into a keypad, and touched his hat as the gates swung open smoothly.

The car glided up a long, cobblestone driveway lined with ancient oak trees, finally coming to a stop in front of a sprawling, Tudor-style manor house built of dark stone, slate roofing, and grand leaded-glass windows.

"Welcome to the Voss Estate," Elias said, unbuckling his seatbelt.

As Marcus opened the car door, Zaria stepped out into the crisp, cool night air. The absolute stillness of the country estate was a stark contrast to the loud, chaotic streets of the city she had known her entire life.

Inside the grand foyer, a warm fire crackled in a massive stone fireplace. An older woman in a neat grey dress—Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper—was waiting with a warm smile and a silver tray containing hot tea and fresh pastries.

"Good evening, Mr. Voss," Mrs. Gable said warmly. Her eyes immediately softened as she looked at Zaria and the sleeping baby in her arms. "And this must be young Master Theo. The nursery in the north guest suite has been fully prepared, just as you requested."

"Thank you, Clara," Elias said, taking off his coat and handing it to Marcus. "Please show Miss Monroe to her quarters and ensure she has everything she needs for the night."

Zaria looked at Elias, her heart overflowing with an overwhelming emotion she couldn't name. "Mr. Voss... thank you. For everything."

May you like

Elias looked at her, his eyes softening just a fraction—a rare, brief glimpse of the human being hidden behind the formidable wall of wealth and power.

"Sleep well, Zaria," he said quietly. "Tomorrow, the real fight begins."
