Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Boardroom

The temperature in the private office seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second.

Elias did not flinch. He slowly walked around his desk, his long, deliberate steps carrying an aura of absolute dominance. He looked down at Zaria, who was clutching Theo so tightly against her chest that the baby stirred, uttering a soft, questioning whine.

"Explain," Elias commanded, his tone quiet, precise, and devoid of panic.

"My ex-fiancé... Julian Vance," Zaria rasped, trying to steady her breathing. "He was Richard Vance’s youngest son. When I got pregnant, Julian didn't want the baby. He wanted me to sign an NDA and take a payout to leave Chicago. When I refused, he... he died three months later in a high-speed car crash on I-90."

She swallowed back a dry sob, holding Theo closer. "After Julian died, Richard Vance came to my apartment. He didn't care about me, but he wanted Theo. He said the Vance family needed an heir for their corporate trust, and a 'lowly, penniless waitress' had no right to raise a Vance child. He tried to buy me off. When I ran, he used his connections to freeze my bank accounts, blacklist me from every reputable restaurant in the city, and keep me in constant fear."

Elias listened, his expression turning into a mask of pure, sculpted marble.

Richard Vance was the CEO of Vance Global Holdings—a shadowy private equity firm that specialized in hostile takeovers, distressed real estate acquisitions, and predatory debt buys. For the past two years, Vance had been aggressively buying up secondary notes on Elias’s hospitality group, attempting to force a margin call that would give him control of the Pearl Room and its surrounding prime downtown land.

Elias had assumed Vance’s interest in the Pearl Room was purely financial.

Now, he realized it was personal.

"He used his private investigators to trace my Social Security number when I filled out the tax forms for my employment here," Zaria whispered, terror wide in her dark eyes. "Mr. Voss, please... let me take Theo out through the service exit. If he sees Theo here, he'll bring his lawyers and his security men. He'll take him from me!"

"Silence," Elias said softly, holding up a single, long finger.

The heavy oak door of the office suddenly rattled as three sharp, arrogant knocks echoed through the thick wood. Without waiting for an invitation, the brass handle turned, and the door swung open.

Richard Vance stepped into the sanctuary.

At sixty-two, Vance looked like the quintessential predator of high finance: silver hair meticulously swept back, a bespoke charcoal Savile Row suit, gold signet ring glittering on his right hand, and a sharp, cruel smile that never reached his pale blue eyes. Behind him stood two heavy-set men in dark tactical suits, their hands resting comfortably near their belts.

"Elias," Vance said, his voice dripping with smooth, practiced arrogance as he stepped across the threshold. "I do apologize for the intrusion. But when an opportunity arises to inspect an asset in which my firm holds a forty percent debt stake, I prefer not to give the debtor time to polish the books."

Elias did not move from behind his desk. He didn't offer a chair. He didn't offer a greeting.

"You are trespassing in my private quarters, Richard," Elias said smoothly, his voice dangerously low. "And your security personnel are violating property boundaries. Have them step outside into the hallway before I have Marcus remove their kneecaps."

Vance chuckled—a dry, raspy sound—but waved a hand dismissively behind him. The two guards stepped back out into the corridor, closing the door halfway.

That was when Vance’s eyes drifted away from Elias and landed squarely on Zaria Monroe.

His smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, predatory gleam. His eyes locked onto the bundle in her arms, tracing the curve of the fleece blanket hiding Theo's face.

"Well, well, well," Vance purred, taking a step toward Zaria. "Look what the tide washed in. I spent three months looking for you, Zaria. I should have known you’d be hiding in the underbelly of one of Voss’s crumbling establishments."

Zaria took an instinctual step backward, putting her back against the glass window, shielding her baby with her entire body.

"Stay away from him, Mr. Vance," Zaria said, her voice shaking but resolute. "Theo is my son."

"He is a Vance," Richard Vance snapped, his polite veneer instantly stripping away to reveal the cold, tyrannical man beneath. "He carries my blood, my legacy, and the legal right to a fifty-million-dollar trust fund left by my late son. You are a disposable, uneducated girl living in a roach-infested studio apartment in Pilsen, working as a glorified plate-carrier."

He turned back to Elias, his lips curling into a sneer. "Hand her over, Elias. This doesn't concern you. She’s an employee who entered your private office without permission. I'll take her and the child off your hands, and in exchange, I might give you a ninety-day extension on the mortgage note that comes due on the first of the month."

Elias slowly picked up a heavy silver pen from his desk, turning it over in his large fingers.

"You think forty percent of my secondary debt gives you the authority to dictate who stands in my office, Richard?" Elias asked softly.

"It gives me enough leverage to destroy you by Monday morning if you cross me," Vance threatened, leaning over the mahogany desk, pressing his hands against the polished wood. "Give me the girl and the baby. Now."

Elias stood up.

He didn't rush. He simply straightened his massive shoulders, towering over Vance, casting a dark, imposing shadow that engulfed the older man entirely.

"Three things are going to happen right now, Richard," Elias said, his voice dropping into a register that made the glass windows vibrate faintly. "First, you are going to remove your hands from my desk before I break your fingers."

Vance’s eyes widened slightly, and he slowly pulled his hands back, though his jaw remained clenched.

"Second," Elias continued, step by step, "Miss Monroe is not just an employee. Effective ten minutes ago, she is the head of my family’s private residential household staff, which grants her full legal tenancy and security protection within the Voss private residential estate."

Zaria’s head snapped up, her breath catching in her throat.

"And third," Elias whispered, leaning down until his dark eyes were inches from Vance’s pale face, "if you or your hired thugs ever set foot on a property I own, or approach Miss Monroe and her child again, I will release the complete, unredacted audit files regarding the offshore shell accounts you used to hide your late son’s offshore assets from the IRS."

May you like

Vance went completely white. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse. "You... you don't have those files."

"I owned the bank in Nassau that held them, Richard," Elias said with a terrifying, ice-cold smile. "Now, get out of my office before I lose my patience."
