Chapter 10 - ASHES AND PROMISES

The fallout was swift and absolute.

With Vincenzo Falcone dead and his top lieutenants eliminated in the warehouse, the Falcone syndicate collapsed overnight. Dominic moved with ruthless efficiency, seizing their territories, neutralizing their remaining strongholds, and installing loyal capos to maintain order. The streets of Chicago ran red for three days, and then, a terrifying, absolute peace settled over the city.

The Moretti family had won. Dominic was the undisputed king.

I spent those three days locked in the master suite, refusing to let Matteo out of my sight. The trauma of the kidnapping lingered in my bones. Every shadow made me jump; every unexpected noise sent my hand flying to the heavy silver pistol Dominic had placed on my nightstand.

A knock sounded at the door. I flinched, pulling Matteo closer.

"It's me," Dominic's voice came through the heavy oak.

"Come in."

He entered, looking exhausted but victorious. He had changed out of his blood-stained suit into casual slacks and a soft charcoal sweater. The hardness that had defined his features for the past few days was gone, replaced by a quiet, cautious vulnerability as he looked at us.

He sat on the edge of the bed, reaching out to gently stroke Matteo's cheek. The baby babbled happily, reaching for his father's hand.

"It's over," Dominic said softly, his eyes meeting mine. "The Falcones are eradicated. The mole network has been dismantled. The city is quiet."

"Is it ever truly over in your world, Dominic?" I asked, exhaustion lacing my voice.

He sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. "No. But we have secured a peace that will last for a very long time. Nobody will dare challenge the Morettis again. You are safe, Elara. I swear it on my life."

I looked down at the baby in my arms. He was healthy, smiling, completely unaffected by the violence that had surrounded him. I had saved him from choking. I had saved him from the Falcones. He felt like my own.

"Dominic," I started, my voice trembling slightly. "Before... before the warehouse, you paid me an exorbitant amount of money to be a nanny. To do a job."

Dominic's face hardened, panic flashing in his eyes. "Elara, if you're asking to leave—"

"I'm not," I interrupted, reaching out to cover his hand with mine. "I'm saying I can't be an employee anymore. I can't pretend this is just a job. I love him, Dominic. I love Matteo as if he were Leo. And..." I swallowed hard, gathering my courage. "I love you."

Dominic froze. The man who ordered executions without blinking looked completely undone by three simple words. He stared at me, his chest rising and falling heavily.

"I am a monster, Elara," he whispered, his voice thick with self-loathing. "You saw what I did in that warehouse. You saw what I ordered Silas to do. My hands are stained with blood that will never wash off. You are light, and compassion, and life. I will corrupt you."

"You didn't corrupt me, Dominic," I said fiercely, moving closer to him. "You protected me. You protected your son. The world isn't black and white. It's violent and cruel, and you navigate it so we don't have to. I'm not afraid of your darkness. I'm afraid of a life without you in it."

A shudder ran through Dominic's massive frame. He reached out, hauling me into his chest, burying his face in my hair. He held me as if I were the only thing tethering him to the earth.

"I have loved you since the moment you looked me in the eye at Bellavita and told me I was hurting my son," Dominic confessed, his voice muffled against my neck. "I have loved you since you stitched me together on a cold floor and refused to run. You are my queen, Elara. My heart. My everything."

He pulled back just enough to look into my eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He flipped it open. Inside sat a breathtaking diamond ring, elegant and fierce.

"I don't want a nanny," Dominic said, his dark eyes burning with intensity. "I want a mother for my son. I want a wife. I want a partner to stand beside me and rule this empire. Marry me, Elara."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes, blurring my vision. All the grief, the loss of Leo, the terrifying nights—it all led to this moment. I had found a broken family that needed my healing as much as I needed theirs.

"Yes," I sobbed, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, I'll marry you."

Dominic slipped the ring onto my finger, sealing the promise. He kissed me, slow and deep, a vow of eternal protection and love. In the safety of his arms, with our son cooing beside us, the shadows of the past finally receded, replaced by the brilliant dawn of our future.
