Chapter 11 - A NEW DAWN

The Mediterranean sun beat down warmly on the private terrace of our villa in Sicily.

It had been eighteen months since the terrifying night in the Chicago warehouse. True to his word, Dominic had secured an ironclad peace in the city. The Moretti name was no longer just feared; it was respected. He had shifted a massive portion of the family's assets into legitimate businesses—real estate, shipping, and philanthropy—distancing us from the violence of the streets. He was still the Don, but he ruled from the boardroom now, not the alleyways.

I sat on a plush lounge chair, sipping sparkling water and watching the waves crash against the pristine coastline below.

A squeal of pure joy interrupted the sound of the ocean.

"Gotcha!" Dominic’s deep voice boomed.

I turned to see my husband running across the manicured lawn, scooping a laughing two-year-old into the air. Matteo shrieked with delight, his dark hair—so like his father's—blowing in the coastal breeze. Dominic spun him around, planting loud kisses on his chubby cheeks, entirely unbothered by the fact that he was wearing a very expensive linen suit.

Seeing Dominic like this—relaxed, smiling, openly affectionate—was still a miracle to me. The ruthless mafia boss was dead, buried beneath the loving father and devoted husband he had become.

"Mama!" Matteo yelled, pointing at me as Dominic set him down. He came toddling over on unsteady legs, holding a slightly mangled flower he had plucked from the garden. He practically threw himself onto my lap. "For you!"

"Thank you, my sweet boy," I smiled, tucking the crushed daisy behind my ear and kissing his forehead.

Dominic walked over and dropped onto the edge of my lounge chair. He leaned in and kissed me softly, lingering for a moment to just breathe me in. His hand naturally moved to rest on my slightly rounded stomach.

"How is our little princess doing today?" Dominic asked, his eyes softening as he rubbed his thumb over the five-month baby bump hidden beneath my sundress.

"Kicking like her father," I teased, covering his hand with mine. "She's going to be a handful."

"Good," Dominic grinned, a flash of his old arrogance peeking through. "A Moretti woman should be a force of nature. Just like her mother."

I leaned my head against his shoulder, looking out at the endless horizon. A profound sense of peace washed over me. I had lost a piece of my soul when Leo died, a gaping wound I thought would bleed forever. I had tried to hide from the world, serving pasta in a restaurant, pretending I didn't care about anything.

But Dominic and Matteo had dragged me back into the light. They had forced me to care, to fight, to love again. We were a family forged in blood and fire, stitched together by necessity and bound by a love that defied all odds.

Dominic wrapped his arm around me, pulling me flush against his side. Matteo scrambled up to sit between us, babbling happily about a seagull he had seen.

"Are you happy, Mrs. Moretti?" Dominic murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of my head.

I looked at my beautiful son, felt the kick of my daughter in my womb, and looked into the eyes of the man who would burn the world to keep us safe. The nightmares were gone. The silence was no longer frightening. It was filled with laughter, love, and life.

"I've never been happier, Mr. Moretti," I whispered back.

And for the first time in a very long time, I knew the happily ever after wasn't just a fairy tale. It was real, and it was ours.
