THE SILENT ECHOES OF CHICAGO / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 8 - THE ABDUCTION

The morning after the gala, the mansion felt suffocatingly quiet. Dominic had left early to meet with his capos, the tension from Falcone's veiled threats demanding immediate strategic planning. I was left in the nursery with Matteo, who was aggressively chewing on a teething ring, blissfully unaware of the war raging outside his window.

Silas stood at his usual post by the door, a silent gargoyle.

"He's running a slight fever," I murmured, checking the digital thermometer I had just pressed to Matteo's ear. "Just teething, but I need the baby Tylenol from the downstairs medical supply closet. The one up here is empty."

Silas nodded heavily. "I'll send one of the guards up with it." He keyed his radio. "Marco, bring the infant Tylenol from the basement vault to the nursery."

Static crackled back. "Copy that."

I went back to soothing Matteo, rocking him gently. Five minutes passed. Then ten.

"Where is he?" I asked, frustration creeping into my voice.

Silas frowned. He tapped his earpiece. "Marco. Status."

Nothing but static. Silas's posture instantly shifted from relaxed guard to active combatant. He drew his sidearm. "Stay here. Lock the door behind me."

He stepped out into the hallway. I hurried to close the heavy oak door, my hand on the deadbolt. Just as I went to slide it shut, a sudden, blinding pain exploded at the back of my skull.

I stumbled forward, crying out as I crashed to my knees. The world spun violently, my vision flashing with black spots. I tried to push myself up, tried to scream for Silas, but strong hands grabbed me by the hair, yanking my head back.

"Not a sound, sweetheart," a cold voice whispered in my ear.

Through my blurring vision, I saw him. Marco, the young guard Dominic had hired three months ago. The mole. The traitor who had let the Falcones into the gate.

He held a suppressed pistol to my temple. With his other hand, he reached into the crib and scooped up a crying Matteo.

"No!" I screamed, lunging for him, ignoring the gun. "Put him down!"

Marco struck me across the face with the butt of the pistol. The impact sent me sprawling onto the plush rug, blood pooling in my mouth. I fought to stay conscious, crawling desperately toward the door, toward my baby.

"Don't make this messy, Elara," Marco sneered, stuffing Matteo clumsily into a large duffel bag designed to conceal weapons. He zipped it halfway, leaving enough room for air, but muting the baby's terrified screams. "Falcone wants the heir. You're just a bonus."

"Silas..." I gasped out, my vision darkening.

"Silas is taking a nap at the bottom of the stairs," Marco replied coldly. He grabbed me by the collar of my shirt and dragged me to my feet. "Move. Now. Or I put a bullet in the kid right here."

Terror, pure and unadulterated, pumped adrenaline through my veins, pushing back the darkness creeping at the edges of my vision. I stumbled forward, forced out the secret servants' staircase that led directly to the underground garage. Marco had meticulously planned this. He knew the blind spots in the security cameras. He knew the patrol routes.

He shoved me into the trunk of a waiting sedan, throwing the duffel bag containing a sobbing Matteo in next to me.

"Keep him quiet," Marco ordered, before slamming the trunk shut, plunging us into absolute darkness.

I scrambled toward the bag, unzipping it frantically and pulling Matteo against my chest. He was shrieking, his little body trembling with terror. "Shh, shh, I've got you. Mama's got you," I whispered, the words slipping out naturally, fiercely. I kissed his head in the suffocating dark as the car engine roared to life and we accelerated sharply.

I had no idea where we were going. I only knew that Vincenzo Falcone had finally captured his prize.

We drove for what felt like hours. I used the time in the pitch black to check my surroundings. My hands traced the edges of the trunk, looking for a glow-in-the-dark emergency release latch. Older model car. No latch. I felt around the medical supplies I always kept in my pockets out of habit. I had a pair of heavy trauma shears. It wasn't much, but it was metal, and it was sharp. I gripped the shears tight, hiding them up my sleeve.

Eventually, the car lurched to a halt over rough terrain. The engine cut off. Heavy doors slammed, and footsteps approached.

The trunk popped open, blinding me with harsh, artificial warehouse lighting. Marco grabbed my arm and hauled me out. I clutched Matteo desperately, refusing to let him go.

We were in an abandoned meatpacking facility. The smell of rust, old blood, and damp earth made my stomach churn. Standing in the center of the vast, empty room, surrounded by dozens of heavily armed men, was Vincenzo Falcone.

He smiled like a predator examining its prey.

"Welcome, Ms. Vance," Falcone said, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I apologize for the rough accommodations. But Dominic left me no choice. Now, be a good girl and hand over the child."

"Go to hell," I spat, holding Matteo tighter.

Falcone sighed, snapping his fingers. Two massive thugs stepped forward, ripping Matteo from my arms. I screamed, fighting like a wild animal, kicking and scratching, but a third man struck me behind the knees, sending me crashing to the filthy concrete floor.

"Such a fighter," Falcone mocked, watching his men secure Matteo in a dirty playpen across the room. The baby's cries echoed agonizingly. Falcone pulled out a phone and dialed a number, putting it on speaker.

It rang twice.

"Vincenzo," Dominic's voice came through the speaker. It wasn't a shout. It was a terrifying, hollow whisper of absolute death.

"Dominic, my boy," Falcone gloated. "I have something of yours. Actually, I have two things of yours. One of them is crying quite loudly. The other is bleeding on my floor."

A horrifying silence stretched over the phone line. When Dominic finally spoke, the air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

"If you touch a single hair on her head, if my son sheds a single tear, I will not just kill you, Vincenzo. I will flay you alive and feed your heart to the dogs."

Falcone laughed. "Empty threats from a broken Don. You have one hour, Dominic. Come to the old slaughterhouse on 43rd alone. Sign over the port territories, and surrender your organization. Do that, and the girl and the baby live. Try to bring an army, and I shoot them both in the head."

He hung up before Dominic could answer.

Falcone looked down at me, his eyes gleaming with triumph. "The great Dominic Moretti, brought to his knees by a nurse and a bastard child. Tragic."

May you like

I looked up at him, my vision blurring from the head wound, gripping the trauma shears hidden in my sleeve.

"You're dead," I whispered, tasting blood. "You just don't know it yet."
