Chapter 9 - Judgment Day

Six months later, the federal district courtroom in lower Manhattan was packed to capacity. Flash photography outside had been banned, but the media outlets spilled out onto Foley Square, broadcasting every detail of the high-profile corporate and elder-abuse trial across national news networks.
Judge Sarah Sterling, a jurist known for her unyielding stricture against white-collar crime and abuse of the vulnerable, sat behind the raised mahogany bench. Her expression was like carved stone as she looked down at the defense table.
Victoria Vance stood before the bench, flanked by a court-appointed public defender who looked entirely exhausted. Her expensive designer wardrobe had been replaced by prison issue, and her spirit seemed entirely broken.
"Victoria Vance," Judge Sterling said, her clear, ringing voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "You have been found guilty by a federal jury on all counts: wire fraud, conspiracy to embezzle, malicious interference with elder care, and subornation of perjury. The evidence presented by the prosecution—including the comprehensive digital logs, audio recordings, and expert medical testimony—paints a picture of calculated, remorseless cruelty."
Victoria kept her eyes fixed on the polished linoleum floor, her hands tightly clasped in front of her.
"You targeted a family that welcomed you, you isolated a vulnerable woman who could not speak for herself, and you attempted to destroy an American institution for your own personal greed," Judge Sterling continued, opening the sentencing dossier. "It is the opinion of this court that individuals who prey upon the elderly and exploit positions of trust must face the harshest penalties allowed under federal law."
The courtroom held its collective breath.

"I hereby sentence you to twenty-five years in a federal correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first fifteen years," Judge Sterling pronounced, bringing her gavel down with a sharp, definitive crack. "Case closed. Take the prisoner away."
U.S. marshals immediately stepped forward, placing their hands on Victoria's shoulders and guiding her through the side exit. She didn't look back. She didn't say a word. She simply vanished into the shadows of the hallway, her grand illusion reduced to nothing more than a cautionary tale.
