Chapter 7 - The Mother’s Voice

Back at the estate, the golden afternoon sun filtered through the leaded glass windows of the library, casting warm geometric patterns across the Persian rugs.
Eleanor Vance sat comfortably in her armchair, her strength returning day by day now that the neuro-inhibitors had completely cleared from her system. Julian sat across from her on a leather ottoman, listening intently as his mother recounted the months of psychological terror she had endured in absolute silence.
"She... she told me nobody would ever listen," Eleanor said, her voice stronger now, though still carrying the soft tremor of her recovery. "She said if I tried to press the emergency call button, she would tell the doctors I was descending into severe dementia and have me committed to a locked state facility."
Julian felt a cold spike of fury pierce his chest, though he kept his face carefully controlled for his mother's sake. He reached out and squeezed her hand. "She’s never going near you again, Mom. Her assets are frozen, her co-conspirators are in federal custody, and her trial will ensure she spends the next couple of decades behind bars."
Eleanor looked at her son, her eyes shining with deep pride. "You waited. Just like your father used to do. You never rushed; you let her weave her own hangman's knot."
"In business and in life, Mom, patience is the ultimate weapon," Julian replied softly.
Just then, Clara knocked gently on the open library door, holding a silver tablet. "Excuse me, Mr. Vance. You have an urgent video call coming through on the secure line from Agent Marcus. He says it’s regarding Victoria's initial deposition."
Julian stood up, smoothing his jacket. "Put it on the main display, Clara."
The large, wall-mounted television screen flickered to life, displaying Agent Marcus sitting behind a metal desk in the federal holding facility.
"Julian," Agent Marcus said without preamble. "Your wife just tried to cut a deal."
Julian raised an eyebrow. "Is that right? What kind of deal?"
"She’s willing to plead guilty to the financial fraud and the elder abuse charges," Marcus said, leaning forward. "On one condition."
"Name it," Julian replied flatly.

"She wants you to drop the civil lawsuits against her family estate in Europe, and she wants access to her remaining trust fund to pay for her defense counsel."
Julian let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Tell her the deal is denied. Tell her she can spend every last cent of her defense fund trying to explain to a federal judge why she thought she could terrorize my mother and steal my company. The deal window is officially closed."
