Chapter 3 - The Vault of Secrets

The steel kitchen shutters slammed upward with a loud pneumatic hiss as federal agents overrode the system, flooding the kitchen with armed personnel and cold night air.

Special Agent Marcus Vance (no relation, but cut from the same uncompromising cloth) stepped through the threshold, his tactical vest gleaming under the recessed ceiling lights. He looked at Victoria, who was now backed against the marble island, trembling and cornered, and then at Julian, who stood tall amidst the glittering shards of glass.

"Mr. Vance," Agent Marcus nodded professionally. "Secure?"

"Secured," Julian replied, holding out the small black drive he had retrieved from his suit jacket. "Every transaction, every unauthorized access log to my mother's medical room, and the audio files of her planning the frame-up against Clara are on this drive. Fully encrypted, unhackable, and backed up to three independent secure cloud servers."

Victoria let out a choked sound of absolute horror. "You hacked my phone? You bugged the house?"

"This is my house, Victoria," Julian said coldly. "Built with my family's legacy. You thought because my mother suffered a stroke and lost her voice, you could quietly isolate her, drain her medical trust, and institutionalize her while you lived large in Manhattan. You underestimated how fiercely a son protects his mother."

Agent Marcus stepped forward, snapping cold steel handcuffs around Victoria’s slender wrists. The metallic click echoed ominously through the cavernous kitchen.

"Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for wire fraud, elder abuse, conspiracy to commit institutional kidnapping, and malicious falsification of evidence," Agent Marcus recited mechanically, reading her rights as she was pulled away from the island.

Victoria didn't fight. She couldn't. But as the agents escorted her past Julian, she turned her head, her eyes burning with a venomous threat. "You think you've won, Julian? Without me, your company crumbles. I have copies of your proprietary patents buried so deep you'll never find them before the board votes you out next Tuesday."

Julian didn't even flinch. He watched her disappear past the glass doors into the rain, answering softly to the empty room: "Let the board try."
