Chapter 8 - The Storm on the Hill

In late May, a severe, unexpected storm battered the Portland hills. Gale-force winds knocked down trees and severed power lines across the district.

Elena was working in her shop when she heard a structural groan—a massive pine tree near the creek behind her house was giving way under the torrential downpour and soil erosion.

Knowing Leo had run toward the lower perimeter path to fetch his lost toy before the rain started, Elena sprinted into the storm, shouting for her son.

At the same time, Jonathan noticed the storm’s severity and ran outside to secure the property gates. Through the curtain of rain, he heard Elena’s frantic screams near the swollen creek at the property line.

Jonathan sprinted down the hill. He saw Leo trapped on a narrow mudbank across a fast-rising drainage ditch, terrified as a heavy branch pinned his foot.

Without a second thought, the high-powered corporate consultant plunged into the knee-deep, rushing muddy water. He fought the current, reached Leo, and used his full weight to hoist the heavy branch off the boy's leg.

Jonathan lifted Leo onto his shoulder and waded back through the mud, hand-in-hand with Elena, bringing the boy to safety inside the Hale home.

Boundaries of wealth, class, and pride washed away completely in that storm. They were no longer two strangers from different worlds; they were parents fighting for their children.
