Chapter 4 - The Unsanctioned Playdates

Despite Jonathan’s strict warnings, something had fundamental shifted inside Oliver.

The clinical routines no longer worked. Oliver refused his specialized exercises, pushing away the therapists and turning his face toward the window. Whenever he heard the rain or saw the trees sway, he would clap his hands and call for "Leo."

Driven by desperation to see that rare smile again, Jonathan did something he thought he would never do. He walked down the hill to the small, modest home at the end of the public lane.

Elena ran a modest community pottery workshop from her garage. When Jonathan appeared in his bespoke suit on her porch, she didn't look intimidated.

“He won’t eat. He won’t do his physical therapy,” Jonathan admitted, his voice tight, refusing to meet her eyes. “He only asks for your son.”

Elena leaned against the doorframe, a soft, knowing smile on her lips. “Oliver doesn’t need another routine, Mr. Hale. He needs a reason to move. Therapy feels like a chore. Playing feels like living.”

A pact was formed.

Three days a week, Leo was allowed to come to the boundary fence. Jonathan insisted on supervising every second, bringing antibacterial wipes, towels, and safety gear. But slowly, the sterile boundaries melted away.

Leo didn't treat Oliver like a fragile vase. When Oliver struggled to reach a ball, Leo didn't pick it up for him; he yelled, “Come on, Ollie! Kick it!”

Driven by a fierce desire to keep up with his new friend, Oliver began pulling himself forward across the grass, using arms that doctors said lacked muscle tone. He fell, he scraped his knees, he got muddy—and with every tumble, he laughed louder.
