Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Vances

The legal avalanche that followed was swift, brutal, and utterly unblockable.
Armed with four years of continuous, high-definition audio and video evidence, the District Attorney’s office upgraded the charges against Thomas Vance to first-degree felony assault, child endangerment, tampering with evidence, and multiple counts of corporate extortion based on the conversations he had recorded himself conducting in the living room.
My mother was charged as an active accomplice to felony abuse and perjury.
The high-priced defense attorney Thomas hired took one look at the cloud files and advised his client to seek a plea bargain. The evidence was ironclad; there were no legal loopholes, no character witnesses, and no amount of money that could erase the digital ghost of his own cruelty.
A week later, the local news networks carried the live footage of Thomas and my mother being led into the courthouse in orange jumpsuits. The community that had once viewed Thomas as a successful businessman and my mother as a charming socialite watched in horror as the depth of their depravity was laid bare for the world to see.
Inside the courtroom, during the emergency bail hearing, Thomas looked completely diminished. The arrogant sneer was gone, replaced by a hollow, terrified look as the judge read the list of charges.

"Bail is denied," the judge boomed, slamming the gavel down. "Mr. and Mrs. Vance will remain in state custody until the commencement of their trial."
As they were led away, Thomas’s eyes scanned the galley until they found me. I sat in the front row, flanked by Agent Martinez and Dr. Reed. I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I simply raised my cast, a silent, powerful reminder of the exact moment he had broken his own empire.
