Chapter 2 - The Midnight Extraction

The heavy door to the examination room clicked shut behind Dr. Reed, leaving an unbearable, suffocating silence in its wake.
The warmth of the hospital room seemed to vanish instantly. My mother dropped her sweet, concerned-parent facade like a discarded mask. Her face contorted into something ugly and feral, her fingers digging so deeply into my uninjured wrist that her nails drew blood.
"You stupid, ungrateful little bitch," she hissed, her voice vibrating with a terrifying, quiet rage. "Do you have any idea what Thomas will do to us when he finds out? Do you think this hospital can protect you? The second we get in that car, you're going to wish you had died in that bathroom."
I didn't answer. The throbbing agony in my broken arm was nothing compared to the sudden, icy adrenaline coursing through my veins. For eight years, I had been a ghost in my own life. But looking at her now—seeing the absolute panic behind her cruelty—I realized the power dynamic had shifted.
Before she could speak another word, the door swung open again.
It wasn't Dr. Reed who walked in. It was two uniform county sheriff's deputies, their expressions grim and uncompromising, followed closely by a woman in a sharp trench coat carrying a government ID badge.
"Ma'am, step away from the child," the first deputy said, his hand resting firmly on his utility belt.
My mother instantly recoiled, her hands flying into the air as her voice pitched up into a frantic, high-society wail. "Officers! Thank goodness! My daughter is experiencing a severe psychological episode. The trauma of her fall has made her completely delusional—she's making up terrible lies about her stepfather—"
"Save it, Mrs. Vance," the woman in the trench coat interrupted, flashing her credentials. "I'm Agent Martinez from Child Protective Services. Dr. Reed has provided us with a preliminary forensic report of the injuries. Defensive fractures, strangulation marks, and historical bruising in various stages of healing. We are executing an emergency protective custody order for Maya Vance."
"You can't do this! I am her mother!"
"And right now, you are a suspect in a felony child abuse investigation," the second deputy said, stepping forward with handcuffs dangling from his belt. "Thomas Vance is currently being detained by a secondary unit at your residence. You are coming with us to the precinct for questioning."
As they led my sobbing, screaming mother out of the room, Dr. Reed stepped back inside. He looked at me with a profound, quiet respect, handing me a small, sterile cup of water.

"The nightmare is over, Maya," he said softly. "You're safe now."
I took a sip, my hands trembling. "It's not over yet, Doctor. They don't know what's waiting for them in that house."
