Chapter 6 - A Life Beyond Dreams (Happy Ending)

Eighteen months later.
The late afternoon sun glistened over the historic stone quads and manicured green lawns of Oxford, England. The air smelled of old books, fresh rain, and blooming roses.
Inside the high-ceilinged study of a cozy, ivy-covered brick townhouse near the River Cherwell, Dr. Selena Herrera stood near a large mahogany desk, reviewing galleys for her first published book with Oxford University Press.
Her hair had grown back into a gorgeous, shoulder-length bob, healthy, glossy, and thick. Her skin radiated health and peace.
The front door clicked open, followed by the sound of cheerful laughter.
Clara walked in, carrying a basket of fresh pastries from a local bakery, followed by Dr. Julian Vance—a brilliant, gentle, and world-renowned professor of economic history at Cambridge who had been co-authoring a research project with Selena for the past year.
Julian was tall, with kind blue eyes, a warm smile, and an intellect that matched Selena’s without ever trying to diminish it. Over the last year, their professional admiration had blossomed into a deep, tender, and deeply respectful romance—a love built on equality, shared passion, and profound mutual reverence.
"Look who I found wandering near the Radcliffe Camera," Clara teased, setting the pastries on the kitchen counter.
Julian smiled, taking off his trench coat and hanging it up. He walked over to Selena, pulling a small box of fresh lavender from behind his back and placing it beside her manuscript.
"You've been writing for six hours straight, Selena," Julian said softly, his voice full of genuine affection as he gently wrapped an arm around her waist, resting his chin lightly near her temple. "The publisher can wait until Monday. You promised me a walk along the river."
Selena looked up at Julian, feeling a deep, warm wave of peace wash over her heart. In Julian's eyes, she had never seen jealousy, competition, or control. She saw only pride, wonder, and an unwavering love that celebrated every triumph she achieved.
"You're right," Selena smiled, leaning into his touch and closing her manuscript. "The river sounds lovely."
Just then, her phone chimed on the desk. It was an email from her father’s legal team in Mexico City.
Selena opened it briefly. The message was short:
“Dr. Herrera: Final appeals for Héctor Luján have been officially rejected by the Supreme Court. He will serve his full nine-year sentence in the Reclusorio Norte facility. Beatriz Luján's application for compassionate release has been denied due to outstanding civil judgments. Your life and assets are fully secured.”
Selena closed the email. She didn't feel a surge of vengeance; she felt only the sweet, absolute weightlessness of total freedom. The ghost of her past was finally buried under the weight of her glorious present.
Don Aurelio called a minute later via video chat from his estate in Monterrey.
"Selena!" Don Aurelio’s face lit up the screen. "Did you receive the copies of your book cover? I ordered five hundred copies for the foundation library in Mexico City!"
"Dad, five hundred is too many!" Selena laughed, her bright, happy laugh echoing through the cozy English home.
"Nonsense," Don Aurelio grinned proudly. "The daughter of Aurelio Herrera does not write books for small audiences. How is England today?"
"It’s beautiful, Dad," Selena said, looking out the window at the golden sunlight hitting the ancient stone spires of Oxford, then turning to look at Julian, who was pouring tea for Clara with a gentle smile. "It’s completely, wonderfully beautiful."

She ended the call, took Julian’s hand, and walked out into the crisp, sweet afternoon air.
She had walked into her doctoral defense through a nightmare of ashes and cruelty. But she had walked out as the architect of her own destiny—unbroken, unstoppable, and deeply, truly happy.
