Chapter 2 - The Unraveling

The room erupted into absolute chaos.

Reporters from the university newspaper began snapping photos. Students leaned over seats, whispering frantically.

"Her father?!"

"Aurelio Herrera is her father?!"

"Wait—she’s an Herrera of the Northern Trust?!"

Héctor’s face went completely white. His jaw hung open like a broken hinge. Beside him, Beatriz gripped the edge of her seat, her knuckles turning chalk-white as her eyes darted from Don Aurelio to Selena in sheer horror.

For three years of marriage, Héctor had believed Selena was the daughter of a bankrupt rural schoolteacher from Coahuila. Selena had deliberately kept her family’s immense wealth a secret when they met in graduate school. She had wanted to know if Héctor loved her for her—not for her family's billions. She had lived on a tiny university stipend, paid her own rent, and worn simple clothes, never taking a single peso from her father’s empire.

And Héctor had mistaken her modesty for helplessness.

"Silence!" Professor Sterling struck his wooden gavel against the table, though his own hands were visibly trembling as he recognized Don Aurelio Herrera. "Order in the hall!"

Don Aurelio turned slowly on his heel. He didn't look like a grieving father; he looked like an emperor about to order an execution. His dark eyes locked onto Héctor.

"Héctor Luján," Don Aurelio said, his voice echoing with terrifying calm. "You spoke of family savings. You spoke of hysteria. Let us talk about truth."

Don Aurelio waved his hand toward one of his attorneys. The attorney stepped forward, handing a black USB drive to the university technician running the grand projector screen behind the committee.

"What is the meaning of this?" Héctor stammered, taking a step backward down the aisle. "This is an academic defense! You can't just—"

"Sit down, boy," Don Aurelio growled, a tone so laced with absolute authority that Héctor’s knees literally buckled, forcing him back into his chair.

The overhead lights dimmed. The wide presentation screen changed from Selena’s title slide to a high-definition video feed.

It was a crystal-clear, infrared audio-visual security recording taken from inside Selena and Héctor’s kitchen in Coyoacán from eleven o'clock the previous night.

The auditorium gasped collectively as the footage began to play.

On the massive twenty-foot screen, everyone in the room watched in horrified detail as Héctor grabbed Selena by both arms, pinning her violently against the kitchen counter. They heard her gasp of pain. They saw Beatriz walk into the frame holding heavy kitchen shears.

The audio was crisp, echoing clearly through the auditorium’s surround-sound speakers:

“Maybe this will remind you where you belong,” Beatriz’s recorded voice sneered on the screen. “Women belong with their families, not standing in front of doctoral committees.”

The screen displayed the horrifying moment the blades chopped through Selena’s dark hair, falling in thick, ruined clumps onto the floor, while Selena kicked and struggled against her husband’s crushing grip.

In the auditorium, several female graduate students burst into tears. Professor Sterling stood up from his chair, his face red with absolute fury.

"My God..." Sterling breathed, glaring down at Héctor and Beatriz. "You monsters."

On screen, the video continued to the moment Selena locked herself in the bathroom, followed by Héctor laughing with his mother in the kitchen, pouring himself a glass of whiskey.

“She won't go tomorrow now,” the recorded Héctor said on screen, taking a sip. “No professor will look at that ragged bird without laughing. By next week, she’ll sign over the deed to her inheritance trust just to pay for a divorce.”

Don Aurelio signaled the technician to freeze the frame. The frozen image on the screen showed Héctor’s mocking, laughing face right beside a heap of Selena’s severed hair on the tile floor.

"Last night," Don Aurelio spoke into the microphone, his voice dripping with lethal intent, "my daughter chose not to call the police immediately because she valued her eight years of academic labor more than your petty terror. She walked into this hall with a ruined crown, trimmed by her own hands in a cheap hotel room, and delivered a brilliant defense."

Don Aurelio looked down at Selena. For a brief second, the iron man’s eyes softened with immense pride and heartbreak.

"She did not need my money to write her thesis," Don Aurelio continued softly. "She did not need my power to stand here today. But she is an Herrera. And no one touches an Herrera without paying in blood and ruin."

Don Aurelio snapped his fingers.

The heavy oak doors at the back of the auditorium opened once more. This time, four uniformed officers from the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office stepped inside, accompanied by two private security investigators.

"Héctor Luján and Beatriz Luján," the lead police officer announced, stepping down the aisle with pair of heavy steel handcuffs glinting under the lights. "You are under arrest for aggravated domestic assault, false imprisonment, and conspiracy to commit extortion."

Beatriz shrieked, clutching her designer bag to her chest as she shrank back into her seat. "No! You can't touch me! I'm an old woman! She's lying! The video is fake! It's an AI fake!"

"The video was captured by an encrypted security system installed in the apartment by my security firm two years ago, madam," Don Aurelio’s lead attorney remarked coolly, stepping forward with a warrant. "It is fully admissible, authenticated, and already filed with the district magistrate."

Héctor scrambled out of his seat, trying to push past the officers toward the side exit. "Selena! Selena, tell them to stop! I love you! I was just stressed! My mother made me do it!"

Selena stood behind her podium. She looked at her husband—the man she had cooked for, cared for, and believed in for three years. She felt no anger. She felt no satisfaction. She felt only a profound, liberating emptiness.

"Take them away," Selena said softly.

The handcuffs clicked shut around Héctor’s wrists. The entire auditorium erupted into wild cheers and thunderous applause as the police dragged the screaming Héctor and his sobbing mother down the central aisle and out into the cold morning light.
