Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Fortynine hours after Claire was poisoned, the final hammer fell on the empire of Arthur Sterling.

The grand state capital building in downtown Atlanta was packed with state officials, news crews, and industry leaders for the official announcement of the Georgia High-Speed Rail Project.

Arthur Sterling stood near the front podium, wearing an impeccably tailored navy suit, adjusting his silk tie with an arrogant posture. He believed that even with Vanessa's arrest, the scandal surrounding Sloane Infrastructure would force the state committee to award the $1.2 billion contract to Apex Global Holdings.

"Ladies and gentlemen," announced Governor Thomas Vance from the podium. "After careful review of all technical proposals, financial backing, and corporate ethics audits... the State of Georgia is proud to award the high-speed rail development contract to..."

Sterling took a half-step forward, a smug, victorious smile spreading across his face.

"...Sloane Infrastructure Group."

The entire auditorium erupted into thunderous applause.

Sterling’s smile instantly froze, his face turning an unsightly shade of purplish red. "What?! This is an outrage! Mr. Governor, Mason Sloane’s company is under federal investigation for internal corruption!"

"Not anymore, Mr. Sterling," a voice echoed clearly from the back of the auditorium.

The crowd turned as I strode down the center aisle. I was dressed in a pristine charcoal suit, my posture radiating absolute, unshakeable authority. Beside me walked Detective Ray Carter, flanked by four federal agents from the financial crimes division.

Sterling stumbled back against the podium, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Mason... you should be at the hospital grieving!"

"My wife is fully recovered, Arthur," I spoke, my voice carrying over the microphone system with lethal clarity. "And my triplets are thriving. But unfortunately for you, your business is about to suffer a complete, fatal cardiac arrest."

Detective Carter stepped forward, pulling a federal arrest warrant from his jacket.

"Arthur Sterling," Carter declared loudly so every news camera in the room caught every word, "you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, racketeering, murder conspiracy, and illegal corporate bribery."

"You have no proof!" Sterling shouted desperately, pulling away as the federal agents grabbed his arms. "This is a setup! A cheap trick by an upstart South Atlanta ditch-digger!"

I walked straight up to Sterling, stopping inches away from his face. I leaned in, my voice dropping into a low, terrifying whisper that made the old billionaire tremble.

"The federal prosecutors have your encrypted phone logs, Sterling. They have the bank transfers to Vanessa Vale, the wire payments to Elena Restrepo, and thirty years of your illegal offshore accounts provided by your former chief financial officer, who just signed a plea deal twenty minutes ago."

Sterling’s knees buckled. The arrogant titan of Atlanta’s old money looked small, fragile, and utterly defeated as the agents snapped cold steel handcuffs over his wrists.

"You thought you could destroy my family because I came from nothing, Arthur," I said, looking down at him with cold contempt. "You forgot that people who start with nothing know exactly how to fight when everything is on the line."

The news cameras flashed frantically as Arthur Sterling was marched out of the state capital building in handcuffs—his reputation ruined, his company seized by federal marshals, and his entire life's work reduced to a cautionary tale of greed and arrogance.

I turned back to the podium, facing the sea of reporters and state officials.

"Mr. Sloane!" a reporter shouted, holding up a microphone. "What’s your immediate plan for Sloane Infrastructure now that you’ve secured the biggest contract in state history?"

I looked into the camera lens, offering a genuine, warm smile that had nothing to do with corporate ambition and everything to do with the simple, beautiful life waiting for me at home.

"My immediate plan," I announced clearly, "is to take a six-month leave of absence to go home and help my wife raise our three beautiful babies."
