Chapter 3 - Unmasking the Serpent

By mid-afternoon, the rain had cleared, leaving the streets of Atlanta glistening under a pale grey sky.

Inside the glass-enclosed boardroom on the top floor of the Sloane Infrastructure Tower, the atmosphere was suffocating. Twelve members of the executive board sat around the long mahogany table, their expressions tense as they looked at the financial tickers running across the digital wall screens.

Sloane Infrastructure stock had taken a three-percent hit since the morning news leaked that Claire Sloane was in critical condition following childbirth complications.

I stood at the head of the table. I hadn't slept in over thirty hours. My charcoal suit was slightly creased, my tie loosened, but the sheer power radiating from my stance made everyone in the room sit up straight.

"Mason," began Richard Croft, a senior board member and long-time investor. "We all deeply sympathize with your family's situation. What happened to Claire is tragic. But the state transport committee is voting on the $1.2 billion rail project in less than forty-eight hours. Arthur Sterling’s representatives at Apex Global are already lobbying the state governor, claiming that Sloane Infrastructure lacks stable leadership to execute the contract."

"Is that so, Richard?" I said, my voice cutting through the room like a blade. "And how do you know what Sterling’s representatives are telling the governor?"

Richard blinked, shifting uncomfortably in his leather chair. "Well... rumors circulate in the industry, Mason. We have to be realistic. If you need to step down temporarily as CEO to handle your family crisis, the board can appoint an interim—"

"No one is stepping down," I interrupted, slamming a thick black leather binder onto the center of the table.

The loud thud made several executives jump.

"In that binder," I continued, leaning over the table, "are the completed engineering audits, environmental clearances, and financial guarantees for the rail project. Everything is fully secured. Sloane Infrastructure is ninety-nine percent ready to break ground."

I turned my eyes slowly toward Vanessa Vale, who was sitting two seats down from Richard, meticulously filing her manicured nails.

"Vanessa," I said softly.

She looked up, offering a polite, practiced smile. "Yes, Mason?"

"You spent two hours last night at St. Catherine’s Hospital," I said, walking slowly around the table toward her chair. "You told me you were taking calls from investors in the hallway. But my security chief ran your cell phone towers log from last night."

Vanessa’s smile faltered, her posture instantly stiffening. "Mason, I don't appreciate being interrogated like a criminal—"

"You didn't make a call to an investor at 1:10 AM, Vanessa," I said, stopping directly behind her chair, placing my hands on the leather backrest. "You made a ninety-second encrypted call to a burner phone located in Midtown Atlanta. A phone registered to an off-shore LLC owned by Arthur Sterling."

A collective gasp echoed across the boardroom table. Board members began whispering frantically among themselves.

Vanessa’s face turned bright red, then ghostly pale. "That's ridiculous! I was trying to gather intelligence on what Apex Global was planning—"

"Save it," I growled, pulling a tablet from my coat pocket and sliding it into the center of the table. "Ten minutes ago, the Atlanta Police Department apprehended Elena Restrepo at a bus terminal in Savannah. She admitted under interrogation that she was paid $250,000 to inject the toxin into Claire's IV bag. The money came from an account in the Cayman Islands—the same account that transferred $50,000 into your personal offshore trust last Tuesday."

Vanessa scrambled out of her chair, her eyes wide with panic as she backed away toward the boardroom exit. "Mason, listen to me! Sterling promised me a twenty percent stake in Apex if I helped him take down Sloane Infrastructure! He told me it was just a temporary sedative to keep you distracted during the board vote! I didn't know it was a deadly toxin! I swear I didn't know!"

The double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Detective Carter stepped into the room accompanied by two uniformed officers. "Vanessa Vale, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit attempted murder, corporate espionage, and evidence tampering."

As the officers grabbed Vanessa’s arms and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists, she began to sob hysterically. "Mason! Please! I helped you build this company! You can't let them take me!"

I watched her cold-eyed as she was dragged out of the room, her high heels dragging against the polished hardwood floor.

When the doors clicked shut, the boardroom fell into a stunned, absolute silence. The remaining board members looked at me with a mixture of awe and sheer terror.

I walked back to the head of the table, looking down at Richard Croft and the rest of the board.

"The vote for the state rail contract is tomorrow afternoon," I said, my voice smooth and filled with absolute authority. "We are going to win that contract. And then we are going to dismantle Apex Global piece by piece until Arthur Sterling has nothing left to his name."

My personal phone rang in my pocket. I pulled it out immediately, seeing Dr. Bennett’s name on the caller ID.

"Doctor," I answered, my heart jumping into my throat.

"Mr. Sloane," Dr. Bennett’s voice came through the speaker, sounding breathless and genuinely emotional. "You need to come back to the hospital right now."

May you like

"Is she okay?!" I demanded, my hand gripping the phone so hard the plastic creaked.

"Claire just opened her eyes," the doctor replied, a wide smile evident in his tone. "She’s asking for you and the babies."
