Chapter 1 - The Circle of Trust

The silence in the ICU corridor of St. Catherine’s Medical Center was heavy, thick with the sharp tang of disinfectant and the cold realization that my life had just splintered into a crime scene.

"Poisoned," I repeated. The word tasted like ash on my tongue. "Who... how could anyone poison a woman who just gave birth to triplets?"

Dr. Adrian Bennett adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his eyes grave behind the lenses. "The toxicology screen flagged an unnatural compound—a synthetic neurotoxin designed to mimic acute postpartum eclampsia. It acts fast, depressing respiration and causing organ failure while masking itself as a birth complication. If our senior toxicologist hadn't been on duty tonight, we would have assumed her heart simply gave out under the strain of labor."

My hands clenched into fists, the knuckles turning bone-white against the fabric of my charcoal suit. "Who had access to her?"

Before Dr. Bennett could answer, a soft, deliberate heel-tap echoed down the marble hallway.

Vanessa Vale crossed her arms, stepping away from the wall where she had been standing. Her tailored designer blazer and pristine makeup looked absurdly out of place in an intensive care unit at two in the morning. Vanessa was the senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Sloane Infrastructure Group—a woman I had hired three years ago to help handle our international expansions. She was sharp, ambitious, and utterly ruthless in business.

"Mason," Vanessa said smoothly, her voice a practiced blend of concern and calculated poise. "This is insane. The doctor must be mistaken. Why would anyone target Claire? She doesn't have an enemy in the world."

I turned my head slowly to look at her. "Her condition was fine an hour ago, Vanessa. You were in the private family lounge. Who went into her suite after the delivery?"

Vanessa’s eyes flickered, a fraction of a second's hesitation before she answered. "Just family and inner circle, Mason. Your mother, your chief head of security, Eric... and the nursing staff. I only stepped into the hallway to answer a call from the board. You know how the investors are—they heard Claire went into labor early and they were worried about the quarter-end infrastructure votes."

"My wife was in labor, and you were taking calls about board votes?" I stepped closer to her, my towering frame casting a dark shadow over her. "Claire gave everything to build this life with me. If someone in my circle touched her drip bag or brought something into that room, I will tear this city apart until I find them."

Dr. Bennett stepped between us, gesturing toward the glass window of the ICU. "Mr. Sloane, your primary focus needs to be on her stabilization. We have administered a broad-spectrum neutralizing agent, but her vitals are still dangerously unstable. The next twelve hours are critical."

I pulled my gaze away from Vanessa and walked up to the thick glass window. Inside, Claire looked so small beneath the maze of plastic tubing and heart monitors. Her long dark hair was fan-spread across the stark white pillow, her skin so translucent I could see the faint blue veins beneath her temples.

Less than two hours ago, she had been holding our hands, crying tears of pure, radiant joy as the doctor announced the birth of our three babies—two boys and a girl.

Mason, she had whispered, her voice weak but brimming with light as she held little Leo, Maya, and Noah. We made it. The dream is real.

Now, those three tiny babies were in incubators fifty yards away in the neonatal unit, and their mother was suspended between life and death because someone in my shadow wanted her gone.

My phone vibrated violently against my hip. I pulled it out, expecting an update from my security detail. Instead, an encrypted text message flashed across the screen from an unknown number:

“A empire built on dirt always crumbles at the foundation, Mason. Enjoy your heirs while you still have a company to pass down to them.”

My blood ran cold. The threat wasn't just personal—it was linked directly to the massive $1.2 billion high-speed rail contract Sloane Infrastructure was slated to sign with the state government in seventy-two hours.

I looked up from my phone. Vanessa was watching me intently, her fingers tapping rhythmically against her sleek leather handbag. Across the hall, standing near the security desk, was Eric Vance—my trusted chief of security, a former Special Forces operator who had guarded my back for seven years.

Someone close to me had crossed the line. Someone had accepted money, or power, or vengeance to strike at the heart of my life.

"Eric," I called out, my voice dropping into a low, lethal register that made both Vanessa and the nurses look up.

Eric marched over immediately, his face grim. "Boss. I heard what the doc said. I've already locked down the maternity wing. Nobody enters or leaves without my personal clearance."

"Not good enough," I said, leaning in so only he could hear. "I want every security tape from St. Catherine’s over the last six hours backed up to a private server. I want a full sweep of Claire’s VIP room for physical evidence before the hospital staff cleans it. And Eric..."

"Yeah, Boss?"

"You and I are the only ones guarding Claire tonight. Trust no one. Not the board, not the executives, not even family."

Eric met my gaze, his jaw tightening as he recognized the dead-serious look in my eyes—the look of a man who had built an empire from nothing and was fully prepared to burn it to the ground to protect the woman he loved.

"Understood, Mason," Eric nodded softly. "I'll lay my life on the line for her."

May you like

I looked back through the glass at Claire, placing my palm flat against the cold surface.

Hang on, sweetheart, I thought, my heart breaking into a thousand pieces. You fought for me when I had nothing. Now it's my turn to fight for you.
