Chapter 8 - A Bridge Between Two Worlds

As the weeks turned into months, the transformation of the Whitmore estate was nothing short of miraculous. The dark curtains were pulled back, allowing sunlight to flood the marble halls. The strict rules were thrown out the window.

Sarah brought her daughter, Alice, to the mansion every weekend. At first, Arthur had been hesitant about having another child in the house, but seeing the way Alice's bright, boisterous energy shattered Brooke’s shell changed his mind completely.

The two girls became inseparable. Alice taught Brooke how to play hopscotch on the massive limestone driveway, and Brooke shared her vast collection of books with Alice.

One afternoon, Arthur walked out onto the back terrace to find the two girls covered from head to toe in bright washable paint, creating a giant mural on a massive canvas Sarah had set up on the lawn. Barnaby was running around them, his tail wagging frantically, a streak of blue paint on his nose.

Arthur stopped, watching his daughter. Brooke was laughing—a real, bubbly, unchecked laugh that echoed across the manicured lawns.

Arthur felt a lump form in his throat. He looked at Sarah, who was standing nearby, watching the children with a proud smile.

"I haven't heard that sound in two years," Arthur said softly, walking up beside her.

"It's a beautiful sound, Arthur," Sarah replied, smiling up at him.

Over the past few months, Arthur had changed too. The severe, cold billionaire had vanished, replaced by a man who came home early from work just to have dinner with his daughter. And as he spent more time with Sarah, witnessing her warmth, her fierce protectiveness, and her down-to-earth wisdom, Arthur realized his feelings for her were evolving into something much deeper than gratitude.
