Chapter 3 - An Unexpected Ally

The next day, the anxiety of almost losing her job weighed heavily on Sarah. She sat on the bus home, staring out at the grey, rain-soaked streets of Southampton. When she arrived at her run-down apartment, she found a bright beacon of light waiting for her: her daughter, Alice.

"Mom! Look!" Alice cried, running to the door and pointing at her feet. She was wearing a pair of brand-new, bright blue sneakers.

Sarah blinked in confusion. "Alice? Where did those come from? I told you we had to wait until next week."

From the small kitchen, Sarah’s elderly neighbor, Mrs. Gable, stepped out with a warm smile. "A delivery driver dropped them off this afternoon, Sarah. Said they were pre-paid by an anonymous donor from your workplace. There was a note."

Mrs. Gable handed Sarah a small, elegant piece of cream-colored stationery. Written in a messy, childish scrawl were the words: For Alice's gym class. From B.

Sarah’s breath hitched. Brooke.

How did a five-year-old child manage to order shoes and have them delivered to a specific address? Sarah realized Brooke must have overheard her talking about Alice's need for gym shoes during their quiet moments in the hallway. But the resources required to make it happen meant Brooke had help.

The next morning at the estate, Sarah pulled Nancy Keene into the empty laundry room, shutting the door behind them.

"Nancy, we need to talk," Sarah said, holding up the cream-colored note.

Nancy’s strict expression crumbled for a fraction of a second, replaced by a deep, exhausting weariness. She sighed, leaning back against the industrial washing machine. "She made me do it, Sarah. The girl hasn't asked for a single thing in two years. When she begged me to find out your address and order those shoes, I couldn't say no to her."

Sarah softened. "You care about her."

"Of course I care about her!" Nancy whispered fiercely, her eyes flashing with sudden emotion. "I watched her mother walk out that front door two years ago and never look back. I watched Mr. Whitmore turn into stone. But I have a mortgage, Sarah. I have a family to feed. If Mr. Whitmore finds out that Brooke is breaking his rules because of you, we both lose everything."

"What happened to her mother, Nancy? Why is Brooke so terrified?"

Nancy shook her head grimly. "Arthur Whitmore didn't always use to be like this. But after his wife left, he locked away everything that reminded him of her. Literally. That locked door in the west wing? That was her private studio. And the dog inside... that's Barnaby. He was her golden retriever. Arthur locks him away whenever he's home because he can't bear to look at him. The dog is starving for affection, just like that poor little girl."

Sarah felt a heavy weight settle into her stomach. The mansion wasn't just a house; it was a museum of grief, and Arthur Whitmore was its warden.
