Chapter 5 - The Blood-Stained PackageThe heavy silence in the medical suite grew suffocating. Dominic’s gaze shifted slowly from Mrs. Bell’s trembling hands to the silver tablet, and finally back to Mara’s pale face. The fragile peace of Blackthorne House had just been shattered for the second time in a week.

"Bring it in," Dominic ordered, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register that brooked no hesitation.

Mrs. Bell nodded stiffly, stepping back out into the hallway. Moments later, the head of Mercer’s private security detail—a towering ex-SAS operative named Vance—entered carrying a reinforced containment box made of clear polycarbonate.

Inside the box lay a single, blood-red velvet jewelry box resting on a bed of dry ice, alongside a pristine white envelope.

"Sweep results?" Dominic demanded, not taking his eyes off the container.

"Clean of explosives and chemical agents, boss," Vance reported briskly, his jaw tight. "The courier left it at the outer checkpoint with a burner phone. The guard who took it is currently being interrogated by internal security."

Dominic stepped forward, using latex gloves provided by Vance to lift the white envelope first. He sliced it open with a surgical scalpel from the medical tray, pulling out a single sheet of heavy cardstock.

Printed across the paper in bold, black block letters were words that made Mara’s blood run completely cold:

THE GHOST CAN RUN, BUT SHE CANNOT HIDE FROM THE GRAVE SHE DUG. NEXT TIME, THE BOY TAKES THE BULLET.

Mara let out a sharp gasp, her hands gripping the edges of the hospital bed so hard her knuckles turned white. The threat wasn't just directed at her anymore—it was aimed squarely at little Caleb.

Dominic didn't flinch. Instead, a terrifying, predatory calm washed over his features. The syndicate boss had officially woken up.

"Open the jewelry box," Dominic instructed quietly, his eyes fixed on Mara.

Vance carefully popped the brass clasp of the red velvet box and lifted the lid.

Resting inside on a satin cushion was a heavy, antique gold signet ring engraved with a coiled viper clutching a broken medical cross—the unmistakable crest of the Vance Pharmaceutical Board of Directors.

Mara stared at the ring, a wave of profound dizziness washing over her.

"My father's ring," she whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "He wore it every day until the day the plane went down. They... they looted his body."

"Or someone kept it as a trophy," Dominic said coldly. He set the note down, his expression hardening into pure, unadulterated granite. "Whoever is hunting you isn't just an anonymous hitman, Elena. They are part of your father's old corporate board—the men who orchestrated the hostile takeover of Vance Pharma eight years ago, using my syndicate's logistics network without my knowledge."

Mara’s head snapped up, her eyes widening in shock. "What?"

"My grandfather had business ties with some of those corporate executives," Dominic explained, pacing slowly beside the bed, his mind working at lightning speed. "Back then, I was younger, running the western shipping lanes. I didn't pay attention to the eastern corporate bloodbaths. But if someone used Mercer shipping routes to smuggle the explosives that killed your family..."

He didn't need to finish the sentence. The implications hung in the air like a thundercloud. Someone had used the Mercer syndicate as a blunt instrument to wipe out the Vance family, and now they were trying to finish the job by eliminating the sole surviving heir.

"They used your name to launder the hit," Mara whispered, horror dawning on her. "And when I survived, they thought I was dead until I showed up here."

"Which means," Dominic said, stopping at the foot of her bed and locking his slate-gray eyes onto hers, "they declared war on my house the moment they sent an assassin through my ballroom doors."

He turned sharply toward Vance.

"Lock down the entire estate. Double the perimeter guards. No one enters or leaves Blackthorne House without my direct biometric authorization. Activate the secondary safehouses in Zurich and Geneva."

"Understood, boss," Vance replied smartly, turning on his heel to exit the room.

Before Dominic could follow, Mara reached out, her fingers weakly catching the sleeve of his shirt.

"Dominic," she said, her voice steadying as a fierce, dormant resolve ignited within her chest. "Running won't work anymore. They want the bloodline ended. If we hide behind these walls, they will just keep coming back... until they get to Caleb."

Dominic looked down at her hand gripping his sleeve, then slowly met her eyes. For the first time since she had met him, there was no barrier between them—just two dangerous people standing at the edge of a precipice.

"What do you propose, Elena?" he asked softly, using her real name like a badge of honor.

"We don't hide," Mara said, a cold, dangerous smile touching her lips—the smile of a woman who had nothing left to lose. "We hunt the hunters."
