Chapter 4 - The Ghost of ZurichThe monitor beside the bed beeped with a sudden, frantic acceleration, mirroring the wild panic surging through Mara’s veins. For eight years, she had buried Elena Vance deep beneath layers of cheap cotton uniforms, dyed hair, fake paperwork, and absolute, crushing silence. She had believed the grave was deep enough.

Instead, Dominic Mercer had un-earthed it in less than forty-eight hours.

Mara forced herself to swallow the metallic taste of fear, her hands curling into tight fists over the hospital sheets. She refused to cower. If she showed weakness now, this syndicate boss would chew her up and use her bones to reinforce his empire.

"If you know who I was," Mara rasped, her voice trembling slightly before steadying into cold steel, "then you also know why I can't stay here. Call off your guards. Let me walk out of this house."

Dominic didn't move. He remained suspended over her, his pale gray eyes searching her face with an intensity that felt like a physical weight. There was no anger in his expression—only a dangerous, calculating curiosity.

"Walk out?" Dominic repeated softly, a humorless smirk touching the corner of his lips. "You took three bullets in my ballroom, saved my only son, and exposed an internal security breach that could have toppled my entire syndicate. You don't just 'walk out' of Blackthorne House, Elena."

"My name is Mara," she shot back fiercely, glaring up at him.

"Your name on paper is Mara," Dominic corrected smoothly, straightening up to his full, intimidating height. "Your name in the shadow world—the world you tried so desperately to escape—is Elena Vance. The sole surviving heir to the Vance pharmaceutical fortune, whose entire family was wiped out in a 'tragic' private jet explosion eight years ago."

Mara flinched as if struck. The memory of that burning wreckage flashed behind her eyelids—the smoke, the screams, the cold realization that her father’s multi-billion-dollar medical empire had been systematically liquidated by a hostile corporate takeover backed by underworld syndicates.

"They weren't accidents," Mara whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed grief and rage. "It was a hit. And the man who ordered it is sitting right across from me or pulling the strings behind your back."

Dominic’s expression shifted, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his features. "You think the hit on my son was actually meant for you?"

"Think about it," Mara argued, ignoring the stabbing pain in her ribs as she pushed herself up slightly against the pillows. "Why would a Russian hitman target a six-year-old boy at a charity gala with a hundred high-profile witnesses, unless he knew the chaos would create a diversion? Or... unless he was tracking me, and Caleb just happened to be standing in the line of fire?"

Dominic fell silent. His mind—trained to process multi-layered criminal conspiracies, cartel movements, and corporate warfare—instantly began dissecting her hypothesis. The logistics of the attack suddenly took on a terrifying new dimension.

"The assassin used a custom-suppressed Val silent rifle," Dominic murmured, thinking aloud, his eyes darkening into pools of slate gray. "Only used by elite black-ops mercenaries or high-tier syndicate executioners. He bypassed my perimeter security with a forged catering badge. If he was hunting an elite target..." He paused, fixing his piercing gaze back on Mara. "He wasn't looking for a billionaire's son. He was looking for a ghost."

"And now he knows where to find me," Mara said grimly, letting out a heavy breath. "Which is why I have to leave. Your house is a fortress, Mr. Mercer, but if they want me, staying here will only bring a war to your doorstep."

Dominic walked back to the window, staring out into the pitch-black night where the rain continued to lash against the glass. For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the hum of the medical equipment.

When he finally turned around, his face was set in stone—rigid, absolute, and terrifyingly final.

"My doorstep was already compromised the moment a bullet entered my ballroom," Dominic said quietly, walking back to the bed and leaning down until his eyes were level with hers. "Nobody touches someone who bled for my son. Nobody hunts in my house without my permission."

"Dominic—" Mara started, using his first name without even realizing it.

"You are staying right here," he commanded, his voice brooking no argument. "You are under my protection. And while you figure out who is trying to drag your past back into the light, we are going to find out who dared bring war to Blackthorne House."

Before Mara could reply, the heavy oak door of the medical suite burst open.

Mrs. Bell, the usually unflappable head housekeeper, rushed into the room, her face pale, holding a silver tablet in her trembling hands.

"Mr. Mercer," Mrs. Bell gasped, looking horrified as she glanced between Dominic and Mara. "You need to see this immediately. A package was just intercepted at the front gates. It's addressed directly to Miss Vance."

Dominic’s eyes locked onto Mara’s. The game of hide-and-seek was officially over.
