Chapter 5 - The Price of Blood

The heavy bronze globe struck Marco squarely across the bridge of his nose with a sickening crunch.
"AAAGH!" Marco screamed, staggering backward, blood spraying from his face as he dropped his gun onto the rug.
"RUN, MIA!" Elena screamed, shoving her daughter into the open doorway of the steel safe room.
Marco recovered with terrifying speed. Roaring in fury, he lunged forward like a rabid animal, throwing his heavy weight against Elena. He grabbed her by her hair, slamming her back violently against the edge of the mahogany desk.
Elena gasped in excruciating pain, white spots dancing across her vision, but she fought back wildly—scratching at his face, biting his hand, kicking at his legs.
"You bitch!" Marco snarled, dragging her across the floor by her collar, pulling his tactical knife from his vest sheath. "I’ll cut your throat right in front of the kid!"
Mia’s scream rang out through the library—a piercing, heartbroken cry. "MAMA!"
Marco raised the gleaming steel blade above Elena’s chest, his eyes wild with sadistic rage.
THUD.
The heavy double doors of the library didn't just open—they were blown completely off their brass hinges, splintering into a shower of wood fragments that rained across the room.
Lorenzo Moretti stood in the doorway.
He didn't look like a businessman. He didn't look like a Don. He looked like an ancient, bloodthirsty deity of death. His white shirt was soaked in blood from the men he had cleared in the hallway, his face twisted into an expression of such pure, absolute fury that the temperature in the room seemed to drop below freezing.
Marco froze, his knife hovering six inches above Elena’s heart.
"Drop the knife, Marco," Lorenzo said. His voice was terrifyingly calm—a stillness far more frightening than any shout.
Marco panicked. He grabbed Elena by her throat, dragging her up in front of him as a human shield, pressing the cold steel of the knife against her jugular vein.
"Stay back, Lorenzo!" Marco screamed, his voice cracking with hysterical fear as he shielded his body behind Elena’s frame. "I swear to God, I’ll open her neck! Take one step, and she dies!"
Lorenzo didn't take a step. He slowly lowered his gun, setting it on a nearby table.
"You came into my house," Lorenzo said softly, taking a slow, deliberate breath. "You put a gun on my family. You put a knife against the throat of the woman I love."
Marco sneered, pressing the blade deeper until a tiny bead of red blood appeared on Elena’s skin. "I win, Lorenzo! You hear me?! I WIN! Call off your men! Give me a helicopter to the airport, or her blood is on your hands!"
Lorenzo looked into Elena’s eyes. Through the pain and terror, Elena saw no hesitation in Lorenzo’s gaze—only a silent, profound understanding.
"Elena," Lorenzo murmured gently. "Drop."
Without a second of hesitation, trusting him with her very life, Elena dropped her weight completely, sagging her body toward the floor.
BANG.
A single gunshot echoed through the room.
Lorenzo hadn't used the gun on the table. He had pulled a small, concealed snub-nosed revolver from his ankle holster in a movement so fast the eye couldn't track it.
The bullet struck Marco Valenti directly between his eyes.
Marco’s eyes rolled back into his head. The knife slipped from his hand, clattering harmlessly against the floor, and his heavy body collapsed backward onto the Persian rug like a sack of stones.
Silence returned to the room.
Elena lay on the floor, gasping for air, her chest heaving as tears rained down her face.
Before she could even lift her head, Lorenzo was there. He dropped to his knees, throwing his arms around her, pulling her up against his chest with a desperate, crushing intensity. He buried his face in her hair, his body shaking violently as he held her.
"I have you," Lorenzo rasped, his voice breaking with raw, unrestrained emotion. "I have you, Elena... you're safe. You're safe."
Elena wrapped her arms around his neck, sobbing uncontrollably, burying her face into the curve of his shoulder. "Lorenzo... oh God, Lorenzo..."
A small, timid footstep sounded near the safe room door.
They both turned.
Mia stood in the doorway, holding her stuffed bear tightly, her big gray eyes wide as she looked at them.

Lorenzo reached out his arm, holding his hand open toward his daughter. "Mia," he called softly, his voice trembling. "Come here, baby."
Mia ran forward, throwing herself into the space between them. Lorenzo wrapped his arms around both of them, pulling Elena and Mia into a single, impenetrable embrace—holding his entire world against his heart as the sirens of the city finally began to wail in the distance.
