Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The sudden appearance of an heir inside the Moretti mansion hit the New York underworld like an artillery shell.

By thirty-six hours after the library incident, rumors had ripped through the five families. The stoic, unshakeable Lorenzo Moretti—a man who had systematically avoided marriage, alliances through blood, or any personal vulnerability for thirty-five years—was hiding a secret child. A daughter.

In the high-ceilinged dining room of the Moretti estate, the atmosphere was thick with unspoken tension.

Lorenzo sat at the head of the long oak table. Beside him sat Mia, elevated on a velvet booster seat, happily painting a drawing book with watercolors. Elena sat across from her, wearing a simple navy silk dress that Lorenzo’s personal tailors had delivered that morning.

At the far end of the table sat three of Lorenzo’s senior underbosses: Dominic, an older man with graying hair and a neck scarred by knife wounds; Santino, a younger, hot-headed lieutenant who managed the docks; and Franco, the family’s chief financial strategist.

"It’s a security disaster, Lorenzo," Santino declared, slamming his hand against the table, startling Mia slightly. Lorenzo’s gaze snapped to Santino so fast the younger lieutenant visibly flinched. "I’m just saying what everyone is thinking, boss! The Valenti crew is already mobilizing. They know the kid exists. If we don't present a united front—if we don't lock this city down—they’re going to hit our supply lines!"

"The Valenti crew is a dying animal, Santino," Lorenzo replied coolly, cutting his steak with precise, measured movements. "They are throwing tantrums because their debt to the commission is due next month and they have no liquidity left."

"They have guns, Lorenzo!" Dominic spoke up, his voice gravelly with age and caution. "And they have Marco Valenti, who has been itching to take your head since the opera house fire four years ago. The boy is reckless. If he thinks this girl is your weakness, he won't care about commission rules. He’ll strike at her."

Mia set her paintbrush down and looked up at Lorenzo with her big, storm-gray eyes. "Daddy?" she called out softly. "Is the loud man mad at me?"

The room went dead silent.

Santino paled instantly, looking down at his plate as if he suddenly wished he could sink through the floorboards. Dominic swallowed hard, adjusting his collar.

Lorenzo set his fork down. He turned to Mia, his entire demeanor softening instantly, a dark smile touching his lips. "No, little one. The loud man is just realization coming to him very slowly. Eat your strawberries."

"Okay!" Mia giggled, reaching for a fruit bowl.

Lorenzo turned his gaze back to his underbosses. The warmth in his face vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated steel.

"Let me be clear to all three of you," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a razor-thin whisper that carried across the long table. "This child is not my weakness. She is my blood. She is the future of the Moretti line. Anyone who looks at her and sees an opportunity to hurt me will find out very quickly why my father gave me this seat."

Franco, who had remained silent, leaned forward. "What are your orders, Lorenzo?"

"Santino, double the patrols at the docks," Lorenzo commanded smoothly. "Dominic, contact our allies in Chicago and tell them the agreement regarding the transport routes is signed. Franco, I want you to short every legitimate stock holding the Valenti family owns through their shell companies in Jersey. By Friday, I want them penniless."

"And Marco Valenti?" Santino asked nervously.

Lorenzo picked up his wine glass, taking a slow sip. "Marco Valenti is mine."

After the underbosses dismissed themselves with quick, respectful nods, Elena stayed behind, watching the staff clear the plates. Mia had been taken upstairs by a vetted, highly trained private nanny to prepare for her afternoon nap.

Elena stood up, walking over to the large window overlooking the manicured estate gardens.

"They're afraid," Elena said softly.

Lorenzo walked up behind her, stepping close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "They are cautious. There is a difference."

"They think I’m a liability," she said, turning around to face him. "A housekeeper who tricked her way into your bed four years ago and came back to claim a fortune."

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Do you care what they think?"

"I care about how they look at Mia," Elena said, her voice trembling with emotion. "I saw Santino’s face. He looks at her like she’s a target. I spent three years making sure she was loved, Lorenzo. I taught her how to paint, how to sing, how to laugh without fear. I don't want her growing up in a world where every smile is calculated and every doorway has a gunman."

Lorenzo looked down at her. He reached out, his hand cupping her cheek, his thumb gently smoothing over her lower lip.

"I cannot change who I am, Elena," Lorenzo whispered, his voice laced with a deep, complex regret. "I cannot erase the blood on my hands or the name I carry. But I swear on my life... I will build a fortress around her so strong that she will only ever know the warmth of this home."

Elena closed her eyes, leaning slightly into his touch despite herself. "And what about us, Lorenzo? What are we?"

Lorenzo didn't answer right away. He slid his hand down to the nape of her neck, pulling her gently toward him until their foreheads rested together.

"Four years ago, I thought you were a dream I couldn't keep," Lorenzo confessed softly against her skin. "Now you are standing in my house, holding my child. You aren't my housekeeper, Elena. You never were."

Before Elena could process his words, the alarm system inside the house began to blare—a sharp, deafening siren that echoed through every room in the mansion.
