Chapter 7 - The Battle for the Estate

The armored SUV crashed through the estate's side gates at sixty miles an hour, tires spraying gravel as Daniel slammed on the brakes in front of the main courtyard.

Roman didn't wait for the vehicle to fully stop. He threw the door open and hit the ground running, his gun drawn, his eyes blazing with cold, deadly intent. Marcus and four heavily armed Calder enforcers spilled out behind him, tactical lights cutting through the heavy rain.

"Pike! Take the back entrance!" Roman commanded as he charged up the front steps. "Marcus, secure the perimeter! Anyone who doesn't belong on this property dies tonight!"

Roman kicked open the grand front doors.

The foyer was pitch black, lit only by the flashes of lightning outside. On the floor near the kitchen entrance lay two of Roman’s loyal guards, unconscious and bleeding from head wounds.

Roman took the grand staircase three steps at a time. As he reached the second-floor landing, he heard screaming coming from the direction of the guest quarters.

He sprinted down the corridor, rounding the corner just in time to see a man dragging Rachel out of the bedroom by her hair while she fought back wildly, kicking and punching. Near the linen closet, Evelyn stood holding a crying Lily by her coat collar, slapping the child across the face to make her stop screaming.

When Roman saw Evelyn strike the little girl, something fundamental inside him broke.

"Evelyn!" Roman’s voice thundered through the hallway like a cannon shot.

Evelyn spun around, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she saw Roman charging down the hall like a vengeful demon.

The man holding Rachel pulled his gun, but Roman didn't hesitate. A single, precise shot echoed through the corridor. The man dropped instantly, clutching his shoulder as his weapon skittered across the floor.

The second gunman turned to raise his rifle, but Daniel Pike burst through the rear access door and tackled him into the wall, disarming him with brutal, military efficiency.

Evelyn scrambled backward, using Lily as a human shield, pressing a small knife against the little girl's coat. "Stay back, Roman! Stay back or I swear I'll cut her!"

Roman stopped ten feet away. His body was completely still, his gun pointed directly at the space between Evelyn’s eyes. His face was devoid of all human emotion—it was the face of an executioner.

"Put the knife down, Evelyn," Roman said. His voice was terrifyingly calm, lower than a whisper, yet it filled the entire hall.

"You ruined everything!" Evelyn shrieked, her hand shaking violently against Lily's neck. "You chose this dirty little maid over me! My father will destroy you for this!"

"Your father surrendered tonight, Evelyn," Roman said coldly. "He gave up the western docks just to keep me from wiping out your family. He knows you're insane. He abandoned you."

"He wouldn't!" she screamed, her focus faltering for a fraction of a second.

In that split second, Rachel, who was lying on the floor three feet away, reached out with all her remaining strength and grabbed Evelyn’s ankle, pulling with everything she had.

Evelyn lost her balance, stumbling backward with a sharp shriek.

Roman moved like lightning. In one fluid motion, he closed the distance, grabbed Evelyn’s wrist, twisted the knife out of her hand, and threw her forcefully against the mahogany wall. The knife clattered harmlessly to the floor.

Before Evelyn could recover, Roman grabbed her by the throat, pinning her to the wall, his dark eyes burning into hers.

"I warned you," Roman whispered, his fingers tightening just enough to let her feel the absolute reality of her death. "I told you if you ever touched them again, I would treat it as an act of war."

Evelyn clawed at his hand, her face turning pale as she gasped for air, seeing true, unadulterated terror in Roman's eyes. She realized in that moment that all her family's wealth, her social standing, and her arrogance were completely meaningless. Roman Calder was fully prepared to kill her right there in his hallway.

"Roman! No!"

Rachel’s voice broke through the storm of fury in his mind.

Roman glanced down. Rachel was on her knees, cradling a sobbing Lily against her chest. Tears were streaming down Rachel’s bruised face, but her eyes held no hatred—only a desperate plea for him.

"Don't do it, Roman," Rachel wept softly. "Don't ruin your life for her. Lily is safe. I am safe. Please... don't become a murderer for a woman like that."

Roman looked at Rachel, then looked down at three-year-old Lily, who was reaching out her tiny hand toward him, whimpering his name.

"Mr. Roman..." the little girl sobbed.

The murderous rage that had consumed Roman slowly receded, replaced by the profound realization of what truly mattered. He looked back at Evelyn, whose eyes were wide with pleading terror.

Roman loosened his grip and let her slump to the floor, coughing violently and gasping for breath.

"Pike," Roman said without looking back.

"Sir?" Daniel stepped forward, holding the disarmed mercenaries at gunpoint.

"Call Martin Hart," Roman ordered, his voice cold and absolute. "Tell him his daughter committed an armed home invasion and tried to murder a child in my house. Tell him he has thirty minutes to hand over full control of the Hart syndicate's assets in Briarport, or I hand Evelyn over to the federal authorities along with every recording of her father's illegal operations."

He turned away from Evelyn as if she were nothing more than dust on his shoe.

"Get her out of my sight."
