Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Within

The rain turned into a heavy, blinding downpour as Roman’s convoy made its way back through the winding coastal roads toward the estate.
Inside the main house, Rachel was sitting in the small kitchen area attached to the guest quarters, trying to read a book while Lily slept peacefully in the adjacent bedroom. The house felt unusually quiet. Most of the primary guards had been dispatched with Roman to the harbor meeting, leaving only a skeletal security crew patrolling the vast grounds.
Suddenly, the lights inside the guest quarters flickered twice and died, plunging the room into absolute darkness.
Rachel stood up quickly, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Daniel?" she called out, stepping toward the doorway.
There was no answer. Only the rhythmic sound of heavy rain beating against the high glass windows.
She grabbed a flashlight from the kitchen drawer, clicked it on, and tiptoed into the bedroom to check on Lily. The little girl was still asleep, wrapped warmly in her blankets. Rachel let out a quiet breath, stepped back into the hallway, and decided to check the corridor.
As she opened the heavy oak door leading to the main hall, she saw a dark figure standing near the top of the staircase.
"Who's there?" Rachel asked, raising the beam of light.
The light illuminated a man wearing a dark tactical jacket. But it was not one of Roman's guards. Standing beside him was a woman wrapped in a heavy trench coat, her damp blond hair clinging to her face.
It was Evelyn Hart.
Rachel froze, terror seizing her throat.
"Hello, Rachel," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with venomous pleasure. She took a step forward, the sound of her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. "Did you really think a pathetic little cockroach like you could ruin my life and walk away unscathed?"
"How... how did you get in here?" Rachel whispered, backing up toward the guest room door.
"Money opens every door, darling," Evelyn sneered, waving her hand dismissively. "Your precious Roman thinks his men are entirely loyal. But everyone has a price. It only took fifty thousand dollars to convince one of your night-shift guards to disable the security cameras and unlock the side gate."
Behind Evelyn, two heavily armed men stepped out of the shadows.
"What do you want?" Rachel begged, her voice trembling violently. "Please, Miss Evelyn... leave my daughter out of this. I'll leave! I'll take Lily and go away tonight! You can have Roman, you can have whatever you want!"
Evelyn laughed, a cruel, mocking sound that chilled Rachel to the bone. "Oh, it's far too late for that. Roman humiliated me in front of his entire staff. He destroyed my family's reputation at the harbor tonight. He ruined my future. So I am going to take away the only thing he seems to care about now."
Evelyn gestured to the two men behind her. "Grab the girl and her brat. We're taking them to the old boathouse on the north shore. When Roman gets back, he's going to sign over every shipping contract his family owns if he ever wants to see his sweet little maid again."
One of the men lunged forward, grabbing Rachel by her arm. Rachel fought back wildly, screaming at the top of her lungs, scratching at his face with her fingernails.
"Lily! Run!" Rachel shrieked.
The bedroom door flew open, and three-year-old Lily stepped out, rubbing her eyes in confusion. "Mommy?"
The second man stepped past Rachel and reached for Lily.
"Don't touch her!" Rachel roared with the fierce, unstoppable instinct of a mother. She bit down hard on the hand of the man holding her, forcing him to yell in pain and release his grip. She threw herself between the second man and her daughter, shoving Lily back into the bedroom and locking the heavy door from the inside.
"Break it down!" Evelyn screamed from the hallway. "Break the damn door down!"
Inside the bedroom, Rachel scrambled across the floor, her hands shaking so violently she could barely function. She grabbed the heavy wooden dresser and dragged it with all her strength against the door just as the first heavy shoulder slammed against the frame from the outside.
The wood groaned.
Lily began to cry hysterically, clinging to Rachel’s skirt. "Mommy! Mommy, I'm scared!"
"Shh, baby, shh," Rachel sobbed, pulling the little girl into her arms and crouching down behind the bed. She pulled out the small cell phone Roman had given her for emergencies and dialed his direct number.
On the dark highway two miles away, Roman’s phone buzzed in his hand.
He answered instantly. "Rachel?"
"Roman!" her panicked, sobbing voice came through the speaker, punctuated by the loud, terrifying sounds of splintering wood in the background. "They're inside! Evelyn is here! She brought men—they're breaking down the bedroom door!"
Roman’s blood turned to liquid ice. The cold, calculating demeanor he maintained in the underworld shattered, replaced by a raw, feral fury.
"Daniel! Drive!" Roman roared, slamming his fist into the back of the driver's seat.
"Rachel, listen to me," Roman said into the phone, his voice shaking with intense urgency. "I am two minutes away. Lock yourself in the bathroom if you can. Hold on! Do you hear me? Hold on!"
"Roman... please... save Lily..."

A loud smash echoed through the phone, followed by a woman's shriek, and then the line went dead.
Roman threw the phone onto the floor, pulled a heavy steel pistol from his shoulder holster, and racked the slide with a terrifying, absolute promise of vengeance in his eyes.
