Chapter 2 - The Silent Estate

The private jet touched down at Falcone-Borsellino Airport under a bruised, purple Sicilian twilight. The air here was different—thick with the scent of sea salt, wild oregano, and the ancient, dusty tension of a territory that kept its secrets buried deep.
Three black SUVs were waiting on the tarmac. Alessandro stepped out of the jet, his coat billowing in the wind. Gianni fell in behind him, followed by six heavily armed men.
"We go to the estate first?" Gianni asked.
"No," Alessandro said. "We go to the cottage outside the north gate. That is where Elena's sister lives. If Marco threw them out, that is where they would go."
The drive up the winding mountain roads toward the Madonie mountains was silent. The headlights of the convoy cut through the dense olive groves and the shadow of ancient stone walls.
When they arrived at the small, whitewashed stone cottage, the lights were dim. Alessandro got out of the vehicle alone, signaling his men to stay back. He walked up the gravel path, his boots crunching softly. He knocked three times—a specific, rhythmic sequence.
The door cracked open, held by a brass security chain. A pale, tear-stained face appeared. It was Elena. Her dark hair was tangled, her eyes swollen, and there was a dark, purple bruise blooming along her jawline.
When she saw Alessandro, her breath hitched in her throat. "Alessandro... what are you doing here? You were supposed to be in Milan for the week."
"Open the door, Elena," he said, his voice softer than it had been all day.
She released the chain and opened the door. Alessandro stepped inside the modest, warm living room. On the small sofa, wrapped in a faded wool blanket, sat Emma. In her tiny, delicate hand, she was clutching the heavy silver wolf-ring, her knuckles white.
The moment Emma saw him, her solemn eyes lit up. She scrambled off the sofa, running across the tiled floor, her small bare feet making quick tapping sounds.
"Uncle Alessandro!" she cried, throwing her arms around his knees.
Alessandro knelt, letting the child hug him. He gently pried her hands open and took the wolf ring. He slipped it back onto his pinky finger. "I told you," he whispered, brushing a black curl from her forehead. "If the tower falls, I come."
He stood up and turned to Elena. The sight of the bruise on her jaw made a muscle twitch violently in his cheek.
"Who did that to you?" he asked, his voice deathly quiet.
Elena shrank back slightly, crossing her arms. "It doesn’t matter, Alessandro. Please, just leave it. Marco... he found a diamond bracelet from your mother’s collection in my cleaning cart. He said I stole it. He said if I didn't leave immediately, he would call the police and have Emma taken by social services. I had to leave."
"The bruise, Elena," Alessandro repeated, stepping closer. "Who touched you?"
"One of Marco's men," she whispered, looking down. "When I tried to explain that I had never seen that bracelet before, he grabbed me. He shoved me against the marble counter."
Alessandro took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of lemon blossoms and rain. The rage inside him was cold, calculated, and absolute.
"Where is the bracelet now?"
"Marco took it," Elena said. "He said he was going to return it to the family vault. But Alessandro, I swear to you on my mother's grave, I did not touch it. I don't know how it got into my cart."
"I know you didn't," Alessandro said. "And we are going to find out exactly who put it there."

At that moment, the door to the cottage opened, and Enzo, the investigator, stepped in. He looked at Alessandro, then at the bruised face of Elena, and gave a grim nod.
"I found it, boss," Enzo said, holding up a digital tablet. "The hospital receipt. And it’s much worse than we thought."
