Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Promise

The silence in the private room of the Principe di Savoia was absolute, heavy enough to drown out the distant rumble of Milan’s traffic forty-two floors below.

Alessandro Moretti stood. He did not look at the ruined $200 million contract, now stained with the slow, red bloom of spilled wine. He did not look at Victor Volkov, whose face had hardened into a mask of dangerous confusion, nor did he look at his own legal counsel, who sat frozen with a gold pen hovering in mid-air.

"Signor Moretti," Volkov said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the distinct, cold threat of the Russian underworld. "We have spent eight months preparing these ports. If you walk out of this room now, there will not be a second invitation."

Alessandro slid the small black phone into his breast pocket. He adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke charcoal suit, his movements slow, deliberate, and entirely devoid of fear.

"The invitation is already withdrawn, Victor," Alessandro said softly. "The deal is dead."

"Over a phone call?" Volkov sneered, leaning forward, his heavy gold watch catching the dim light of the velvet-walled room. "Who is on the other end that is worth two hundred million euros?"

Alessandro paused at the heavy oak double doors. He didn’t turn around. "Someone who knows that when a castle falls, you rebuild it. My apologies for the wine."

Outside, the Milanese rain was a gray sheet blurring the towering glass of the Porta Nuova district. Alessandro’s head of security, a scarred, towering Calabrian named Gianni, was already waiting by the idling, armored Mercedes. He opened the door the moment he saw the look on his boss’s face.

"To the airport," Alessandro commanded, sliding into the leather interior. "Get the Gulfstream ready. We fly to Palermo. Now."

Gianni didn't ask questions. He put the car in gear and navigated the wet, slick streets with aggressive precision. "Is it the Russians, boss?"

"No," Alessandro said, his eyes fixed on the rain-streaked window. "It’s Marco."

Gianni’s hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel. Marco Varga was Alessandro’s underboss, a man who had bled with Alessandro’s father, a man who had run the Sicily estate for a decade. He was practically family.

"What did he do?" Gianni asked.

"He threw Elena and Emma out of the estate," Alessandro said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "He accused Elena of stealing. And he did it while I was out of the country."

Elena Ricci was the daughter of the woman who had raised Alessandro after his own mother died. When Elena’s mother passed away, Elena had stayed on at the estate, quiet, fiercely loyal, and working as the head housekeeper. She was a woman of absolute integrity, a woman who would rather starve than take what wasn’t hers. And her daughter, Emma, was the only child allowed to walk into Alessandro's private study without knocking.

Alessandro pulled the black phone out again. He dialed a secure, encrypted line to his personal investigator in Palermo, a man who worked only in the shadows.

"Enzo," Alessandro said when the line connected. "I want a full sweep of Marco Varga’s personal accounts over the last forty-eight hours. Every transaction, every offshore transfer, every phone log. And find out which hospital in Palermo received a patient from my estate yesterday."

"A hospital, boss?" Enzo’s raspy voice inquired.

"Emma said her mother is crying in the bathroom. But she also mentioned a hospital receipt. Find it."

Alessandro hung up. He looked down at his bare pinky finger, where the silver wolf-head ring had rested for nearly fifteen years before he gave it to a four-year-old girl who built towers out of bullet casings.

The wolf ring was not just jewelry. It was the ancestral seal of the Moretti family. To the old world, the man who held the wolf ring held the authority of the Don. To Emma, it was a toy, a shield, and a promise.

Alessandro closed his eyes as the Mercedes sped toward the private hangar. I’m coming, little one, he thought. And God help anyone who stood in your way.
