Chapter 6 - A Promise Kept

The grand ballroom of the Vale estate was glowing once again, but tonight, the atmosphere was entirely different.
There were no snobbish bankers or judgmental socialites. Tonight, the room was filled with the staff of the estate, the families helped by the Elena Bell Foundation, old friends from Trenton, and people who genuinely loved and respected the Vale name.
At the front of the room, hanging in a beautifully carved gold frame beneath a soft spotlight, was a large, painted portrait of Elena Bell. She was smiling, her eyes warm and full of life, watching over the room.
Margaret stood beneath the portrait, wearing an elegant emerald green gown that complemented her eyes perfectly. She looked up at her mother, a peaceful smile on her face.
We did it, Mom, she thought. The moment was right.
"She looks beautiful," a voice murmured beside her.
Dorian stood there, looking dashing in a classic black tuxedo. But he wasn't looking at the portrait. He was looking at Margaret, his eyes filled with an adoration so profound it left her breathless.
"She does," Margaret agreed, wiping away a stray tear of happiness. "Thank you for this, Dorian. For everything."
Dorian took both of her hands in his, stepping into the center of the ballroom floor. The music shifted, a soft, slow melody filling the air. The guests turned, smiling, as Dorian led Margaret into a gentle waltz.
As they moved across the floor—the very floor where Celeste had tried to humiliate her two months ago—Dorian dipped his hand into his pocket.
He slowed their steps, bringing them to a stop right in front of the portrait of her mother.
Dorian dropped to one knee.
A collective intake of breath echoed through the ballroom. This time, he wasn't kneeling to pick up a ripped piece of trash. He was kneeling with a velvet box in his hand. He popped it open, revealing a flawless, brilliant-cut diamond ring that caught the gold light of the chandeliers.
"Margaret Bell," Dorian said, his voice clear, carrying to every person who loved them. "Your mother saved my family, and you saved my soul. I don't ask you to marry me out of gratitude or debt. I ask you because I am completely, utterly in love with you. Will you do me the greatest honor of becoming my wife?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy streamed down Margaret’s face. She looked at the man who had protected her, who had fought for her, and who loved her for exactly who she was. She glanced up at her mother’s portrait, seeing the silent blessing in those painted eyes.
"Yes," Margaret cried, her voice ringing with absolute certainty. "Yes, Dorian! A million times, yes!"

The ballroom erupted into deafening applause and cheers. Staff members wiped away tears of joy; friends shouted their congratulations.
Dorian slipped the ring onto her finger, rose to his feet, and pulled her into his arms, spinning her around as the music swelled. As his lips met hers in a sweet, passionate promise of the future, Margaret knew that the long, dark winter was finally over. The girl who had once been invisible had found her home, wrapped securely in the arms of the billionaire who had remembered how to love.
