Chapter 3 - Shadows and Smear Campaigns

The study was quiet, smelling of old leather and mahogany. Margaret sat on the plush sofa, a warm cup of tea between her hands. She had stripped off her apron, feeling strangely exposed without it.
Dorian walked in, carrying two thick files. He sat opposite her, his tie loosened, looking exhausted but intensely focused.
"I spent the last hour running checks," Dorian began, his eyes fixed on her. "I called the old Trenton property records. I called the hospital archives. Everything matches. Your mother... she gave up her own rent money to pay our heating bill in December '98. We would have frozen, Margaret. My father was too sick to move."
"She loved your family," Margaret said softly. "She always said you were a boy with stars in your eyes, too stubborn to let the world break you."
Dorian let out a shaky breath, burying his face in his hands. "And I let you clean my floors. I let Celeste insult you."
"You didn't know, Dorian," she said, using his first name for the first time. It felt strange, heavy, yet right. "And you were always kind to me. You paid for my ride when my car died. You created the staff fund. My mother was right about you. The boy she helped didn't disappear."
A gentle look passed between them, a fragile bridge forming over years of silence. But the peace didn't last long.
The door burst open, and Grant entered, his face grim. He held an iPad. "Dorian, we have a problem. Celeste isn't going quietly."
Dorian’s expression hardened. "What did she do?"
"She just leaked a statement to the press," Grant said, handing over the tablet. "She’s claiming that an unstable staff member blackmailed you at the party with a fraudulent letter, threatening to ruin the engagement unless she was given a massive payout. The tabloids are running with it. 'Billionaire Blackmailed by Maid.' It's trending on Twitter."
Margaret went pale, the tea trembling in her hands. "Oh my god... I didn't... I would never—"
"I know," Dorian interrupted fiercely, standing up and coming to sit right next to her on the sofa. He placed a steadying hand on her shoulder. "Look at me, Margaret. I know. She is trying to protect her reputation by destroying yours. I won't let her."
"Dorian, the Arden family has major leverage with the local media outlets," Grant warned. "They are framing Margaret as a gold-digger who targeted you by getting a job here under false pretenses. They're digging into her past, her mother's medical debts. They're making it look calculated."
Margaret felt a cold dread sink into her stomach. The elite world was a shark tank, and she was just a girl from Trenton. They would tear her apart to save a socialite's pride.
"Let them talk," Dorian growled, his eyes flashing with a dangerous light. "They want a media war? I’ll give them an empire collapse. Grant, call a press conference at the Vale Corporate Headquarters tomorrow morning at nine. Invite every major network. Not just the local tabloids—get the Times, CNN, Bloomberg."

"What are you going to do?" Margaret asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Dorian looked down at her, his grip on her shoulder tightening with absolute reassurance. "I'm going to tell the world the truth. And then, I'm going to ruin the Ardens."
