Chapter 6 - The Sweetest Morning

One Year Later

The warm morning sun shone brightly through the tall windows of the grand kitchen at the Duca Estate.

The polished grey stone floors, white marble counters, and hanging copper pots were still arranged with flawless precision, but the cold, intimidating atmosphere of the house had completely transformed.

The kitchen was filled with the delicious, sweet smell of fresh cinnamon rolls, sizzling bacon, and roasted Sicilian coffee.

Sitting at the grand marble kitchen island was four-year-old Emma, wearing a bright yellow sundress and a tiny chef’s hat. She was busily spreading strawberry jam over a slice of warm toast, while her grey stuffed rabbit—now sporting a brand-new velvet ear sewn on by Sophia—sat in a miniature wooden high chair beside her.

Standing beside the stove was Sophia, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater, stirring a pot of warm chocolate sauce while laughing warmly at something Gabriel, who was sitting at the breakfast table reading the morning newspaper, had just said.

The heavy double doors swept open.

Alessandro walked into the kitchen. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, no tie, his charcoal trousers tailored to perfection.

The cold, lethal darkness that had once shadowed his steel-grey eyes was gone, replaced by a deep, relaxed contentment that radiated through his entire posture.

He walked up behind Sophia, wrapping his broad arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest, pressing a soft kiss against her neck.

"Good morning, my love," Alessandro whispered into her ear.

"Good morning, Don Alessandro," Sophia teased softly, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his collar, kissing his lips with deep, familiar affection.

"Ewww! Gross!" Emma giggled from her perch at the marble island, covering her eyes with her sticky, jam-covered hands! "Mommy and Daddy are kissing again!"

Gabriel let out a booming laugh from behind his newspaper, shaking his head with a warm grin.

Alessandro released Sophia with a soft chuckle and walked over to the marble island. He leaned down, scooping Emma up into his broad arms, lifting her high into the air as she squealed with delight, before setting her gently onto his shoulder.

"Did you inspect the kitchen this morning, Lady Emma?" Alessandro asked playfully, walking over to the silver espresso machine on the counter.

Emma looked down from his shoulder at the silver machine, then at the freshly brewed porcelain cup of dark espresso sitting on the marble counter.

She leaned down, took a deep, dramatic sniff of the rising steam, and patted Alessandro’s cheek with her small hand.

"It smells like chocolate and coffee, Daddy!" Emma declared with absolute authority. "No bad medicine today!"

Alessandro took the cup, holding it up in a silent toast to his wife, who was watching them with a glowing, radiant smile from the stove.

"No bad medicine today," Alessandro agreed softly, taking a slow, long sip of the rich, warm brew. "Only home."

And there, in the bright morning sunlight of the fortress he had built, surrounded by the laughter of the daughter who had saved his life and the woman who had captured his heart, Alessandro Duca drank his morning coffee in perfect, unbreakable peace.
