Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Innocence

At 5:00 PM, before the night's blood rain began, Alessandro walked down the wide, carpeted hallway of the third-floor master family wing.

Outside Suite 302, two heavily armed guards bowed their heads as Alessandro approached. He signaled for them to stand down, knocked gently on the heavy walnut door, and pushed it open.

The suite was bathed in the warm, golden light of the late afternoon sun.

It was a luxurious multi-room apartment featuring plush cream velvet sofas, private marble balconies overlooking the lake, and a grand stone fireplace.

Sitting on the soft wool rug near the fireplace was three-year-old Emma. She had unpacked a small plastic set of tea cups and was carefully pouring imaginary tea into a tiny blue cup for her grey stuffed rabbit, who was sitting upright against a throw pillow.

Sophia stood near the balcony doors, hanging fresh clothes in the walk-in closet. When she saw Alessandro enter, she immediately dropped her work and curtsied nervously.

"Mr. Duca," Sophia said quickly. "I... we were just organizing our things. The room is far too big for us, sir. We are so grateful—"

"It is your room now, Sophia," Alessandro interrupted gently, waving his hand to put her at ease. "You don't need to curtsy to me here."

He walked across the room and sat down directly on the wool rug across from Emma.

The little girl looked up at him with her large, intelligent brown eyes. She picked up a tiny pink plastic tea cup and offered it across the small wooden play table to the most feared mafia Don in the Midwest.

"Tea, sir?" Emma asked politely.

Alessandro looked at the tiny plastic cup, then at the little girl’s expectant smile.

Without a moment’s hesitation, the six-foot-four syndicate leader carefully reached out with his large, scarred hand, took the microscopic pink cup between his thumb and forefinger, and raised it to his lips, making a soft sipping sound.

"Exquisite," Alessandro declared solemnly. "A fine blend, Lady Emma."

Emma let out a bright, musical giggle that echoed through the high ceilings of the luxury suite. "It’s strawberry tea! Rabbit likes it best!"

Sophia stood near the fireplace, watching the scene with tears shimmering in her hazel eyes. For eighteen months, since her husband died of heart failure in California, she had lived in constant fear—working fourteen-hour shifts, hiding her daughter in staff closets, wondering if they would have enough money for food next week.

Now, watching the legendary Alessandro Duca play tea party with her fatherless child, a profound sense of safety settled over her heart for the first time in years.

"Mr. Duca," Sophia said softly, stepping closer to the play area. "The guards told me there was... trouble arriving tonight."

Alessandro lowered the plastic cup, his expression shifting into a thoughtful calm. "Nothing that will reach this floor, Sophia. My estate is secure."

"Please be careful," Sophia whispered, her voice laced with genuine concern that surprised even herself. "People like Moretti... they don't have honor. They strike when you least expect it."

Alessandro stood up smoothly, looking into Sophia’s face. For the first time, he really looked at her: her delicate features, her soft brown eyes full of resilience, the quiet dignity she carried despite wearing a housekeeper's apron.

"Honor is a rare commodity in my world, Sophia," Alessandro said softly. "In fact, I thought it was completely extinct... until a brave mother and her little girl walked into my kitchen this morning."

He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a small black leather cardholder, placing it on the fireplace mantel.

"In that cardholder is a emergency passphrase and a private satellite link to Gabriel," Alessandro informed her. "If anything happens to me tonight... Gabriel will escort you and Emma to a private villa in Switzerland. The accounts attached to that card will ensure Emma goes to any university in the world she chooses."

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. "Mr. Duca... why are you giving us this? We are just staff..."

"You are not staff anymore, Sophia," Alessandro said, his grey eyes locking onto hers with an absolute, terrifying warmth. "You are the people who saved my life. In the Duca family... that makes you untouchable."

He looked down at Emma, who was now busily brushing her rabbit’s flattened ear with a doll brush.

"Keep my tea warm, Lady Emma," Alessandro smiled softly. "I have a errand to run."

May you like

"Okay, Mr. Duca!" Emma cheered, waving her tiny hand. "Don't let the bad coffee get you!"

Alessandro let out a dark, confident laugh as he turned and walked out of the suite, ready to face the storm waiting outside his gates.
