Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the Tower

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, the Duca Estate had been transformed into an impenetrable war fortress.

The North Shore compound—sprawling across forty acres of dense forest overlooking Lake Michigan—was surrounded by twelve-foot stone perimeter walls topped with motion sensors and razor wire. Thirty elite enforcers, dressed in dark suits and carrying concealed tactical submachine guns, patrolled the manicured gardens.

Inside the grand second-floor library, Alessandro sat behind his massive mahogany desk. Maps of the Chicago port district, financial ledgers, and surveillance photographs were spread out across the leather blotter.

Sitting in the heavy leather armchair across from him was Mateo Duca, Alessandro’s thirty-two-year-old cousin and chief financial officer of the syndicate. Mateo wore a sharp light-grey suit, his dark hair slicked back, his expression a mixture of outrage and profound anxiety.

"It’s impossible, Alessandro!" Mateo insisted, pacing nervously across the Persian rug. "I checked Danny’s background myself three months ago! His references were clean! His family has lived in Little Italy for three generations!"

Alessandro leaned back in his leather chair, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. His grey eyes followed his cousin’s nervous pacing with hawkish precision.

"A clean background means nothing when Salvatore Moretti offers a desperate man two hundred thousand dollars and a gun to his mother’s head, Mateo," Alessandro said calmly.

"So what do we do?" Mateo asked, stopping near the desk, his hands shoved deep into his trousers pockets. "We launch an all-out assault on Moretti’s compound in Cicero! We strike now before he realizes Danny failed!"

"No," Alessandro said flatly.

Mateo blinked, startled. "No? Alessandro, the man tried to poison you in your own kitchen! If we don't strike back immediately, the other families will see us as weak!"

"Revenge taken in anger is a amateur's mistake," Alessandro replied, his tone icy and analytical. "Salvatore Moretti is seventy years old. He is paranoid, dying of liver failure, and desperate to secure his family's legacy before he dies. He would not have made a move this brazen unless he had help."

Mateo’s jaw tightened. "Help? From whom?"

"From inside this house," Alessandro stated, his eyes locking onto Mateo’s face like laser sights.

A heavy, suffocating quiet settled over the library. The only sound was the rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.

Mateo let out a dry, nervous laugh. "Inside this house? Alessandro, everyone in this compound was vetted by Gabriel or myself! We are blood! Who could possibly help Moretti?"

"Danny didn't know how to access the sealed bean vault," Alessandro pointed out, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "The vault passcode is changed every Monday at midnight. Only four people in the world have that code: myself, Gabriel, you, and my head of operations, Marco."

Mateo went visibly rigid. "You... you think Marco did it?"

"I think," Alessandro said, standing up slowly, "that until I find out who sold the code to Moretti, no one leaves this compound without my explicit written permission. Including you, Mateo."

Mateo swallowed hard, bowing his head slightly. "Of course, Alessandro. Whatever you need to keep the family safe."

"Good," Alessandro said. "Now go downstairs. Help Gabriel coordinate the perimeter patrols."

As Mateo turned and walked quickly out of the library, slamming the heavy oak doors behind him, the hidden door behind the bookshelf clicked open.

Gabriel stepped out from the secret passageway, holding a dark satellite phone.

"Did you trace Danny’s offshore bank account?" Alessandro asked without turning around.

"Yes, Boss," Gabriel reported gravely. "The two hundred thousand dollars wasn't wired from Moretti’s bank in Grand Cayman."

Alessandro turned his head slowly. "Go on."

"It was wired from a shell company registered in Panama," Gabriel revealed, his voice heavy with grim confirmation. "A company owned by Mateo Duca."

Alessandro’s eyes closed for two brief seconds as a wave of cold betrayal washed over him. Mateo. His own cousin. The boy he had raised like a younger brother after his uncle died in the port wars.

"He wants the throne," Alessandro murmured softly.

"Mateo has been meeting with Moretti’s lieutenants at a private club in South Chicago for three months," Gabriel added, handing Alessandro a folder of black-and-white surveillance photos. "They promised to make him Don of the Duca family once you were out of the picture. In exchange, Mateo agreed to hand over forty percent of our shipping docks to the Moretti network."

Alessandro took the photographs, staring at the images of his cousin shaking hands with Moretti’s top enforcer in a dark alleyway.

"Does Mateo know we traced the Panama account?" Alessandro asked.

"Not yet," Gabriel answered. "He thinks Danny is still in the basement sub-level, keeping his mouth shut."

"Good," Alessandro said, his tone turning into absolute, unyielding steel. "Let him think his plan is working. Tell Marco to prepare the convoy. We are going to pay Salvatore Moretti a visit tonight... and we are taking my cousin with us."
