Chapter 5 - The New Alliance

Three months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over the manicured lawns of the Blackwood estate. The cold marble foyer had been cleaned, the dark shadows of the winter completely washed away by the bright, warm light entering through the newly installed glass panels.
Ethan was running across the grass, his cast long gone, his small arm moving with complete freedom as he chased after a brightly colored soccer ball. He looked healthy, his cheeks plump and red, his laughter a loud, spontaneous sound that filled the quiet afternoon.
Watching him from the patio table was Lily. She wore a simple white summer dress, her skin glowing in the sun, her posture relaxed and free of the old anxiety that had plagued her during the months of Serena's reign.
A tall, broad-shouldered shadow fell over the table.
Victor stepped onto the patio, dressed in a casual linen shirt and dark trousers, his usual armor of three-piece suits discarded for the weekend. He carried two small crystal glasses of lemonade, placing one in front of Lily before sitting down in the chair across from her.
"The federal court finalized the Montigue asset forfeiture this morning," Victor said, his voice quiet but carrying a profound, relaxed satisfaction. "The family is officially bankrupt. The shipping lanes are fully under Blackwood control."
Lily looked at him, her green eyes soft but steady. "And Serena?"
"She’s currently completing her twelve-hour shift at the warehouse in Gary," Victor replied, a faint, dangerous smile touching his lips. "The foreman says she’s the most efficient packer they have. It turns out, when you have nothing left to lose, you learn how to work very hard."
He reached across the table, his large, scarred hand coming to rest over hers. His fingers were warm, his grip firm but incredibly gentle—the same gentleness he had shown his son in the medical wing.
"I didn't bring you out here to talk about the business, Lily," Victor said, his black eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath hitch.
"Then why are we here, Victor?" she asked softly.
"I need a new alliance," Victor stated clearly.
He pulled a small, velvet box from his pocket and placed it on the table between them. He didn't open it to show off a massive diamond; he opened it to reveal a simple, elegant gold band that had belonged to his mother—the only woman he had ever trusted before the world turned him into a monster.
"The mafia needs a Don, Lily," Victor whispered, his voice thick with a sudden, raw emotion. "But this house... this boy... we need a mother. We need someone who isn't afraid to fight the monsters to keep the family safe. I am not offering you a corporate contract. I am offering you my name, my protection, and my life. Will you stay with us?"
Lily looked down at the gold ring, then out at the lawn where Ethan was currently trying to kick the soccer ball toward the patio, his little face shining with pure happiness as he yelled, "Lily! Look!"
She smiled, a real, beautiful light breaking across her features as she turned her hand over, tangling her fingers with Victor's.
"I never planned on leaving him, Victor," she said softly, her eyes shining with an absolute, lifelong commitment. "And if I have to run this empire with you to keep him safe, then the rest of Chicago better get ready."
May you like
Victor let out a short, low laugh—a sound that hadn't been heard in the Blackwood mansion in over a decade. He stood up, lifting Lily from her chair and pulling her into a powerful, protective embrace as Ethan came sprinting up the patio steps, throwing his small arms around both their legs.
The fiancée had been a snake, the mafia boss had been a warlord, and the nanny had been a protector. But as the spring sun warmed the stone patio, illuminating the three of them held tight against the world, Lily knew that the ledger was balanced, the child was safe, and the true kingdom had finally begun.
