Chapter 2 - The Judgment of Victor Blackwood

The heavy mahogany double doors of the mansion burst open with a sound like a gunshot.
A freezing gust of Chicago wind swept into the foyer, carrying the scent of rain, asphalt, and the distinct aura of impending death. Victor Blackwood stepped across the threshold, his long black cashmere coat billowing behind him. He was early. The transaction at the docks had finished two hours ahead of schedule, a detail that had just sealed the fate of everyone in the room.
Victor stopped. His piercing obsidian eyes took in the scene with a terrifying, calculated speed.
He saw Lily on her knees, her stomach bruised, her hands reaching out in desperate protection. He saw Serena, her high heel raised, her face frozen in mid-sneer. And then, his gaze dropped to the floor. He saw Ethan. His son. The only fragile piece of his soul left in this world, whimpering in the dirt, his tiny arm twisted at a sickening, unnatural angle.
The silence that fell over the foyer was absolute. It wasn't the silence of peace; it was the vacuum that occurs right before a hurricane obliterates a city.
"Victor..." Serena gasped, the venom instantly vanishing from her voice, replaced by a high, trembling sweetness. She dropped her foot, stumbling backward as her face turned the color of chalk. "Victor, thank God you're home. It's... it's the nanny. Lily tried to drop Ethan down the stairs! I was only trying to save him from her, I swear—"
Victor didn't look at her. He didn't even acknowledge the sound of her voice.
He moved with a fluid, lethal grace that belonged to a predator. In three strides, he was across the marble floor. He bypassed Serena entirely, dropping to his knees beside Lily. His large, scarred hands—hands that had broken men’s jaws without a second thought—hovered over his son with a sudden, trembling reverence.
"Lily," Victor said, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that sent a shiver through the room. "What happened to my son?"
"His arm, Victor... please, his arm," Lily sobbed, her tears finally spilling over as she pointed a shaking finger at the toddler. "She dragged him. She snapped it. Please, he needs a doctor. He's going into shock."
Victor gently scooped Ethan into his powerful arms, supporting the boy's broken limb with a tenderness that contradicted his brutal reputation. Ethan let out a tiny, exhausted whimper, burying his face into his father's dark suit jacket.
Then, Victor stood up.
When he turned to face Serena, the temperature in the foyer seemed to drop below freezing. The emotion was completely gone from his face, replaced by a cold, mask-like serenity that was infinitely more terrifying than rage.
"Marco," Victor said quietly.
From the shadows of the doorway, his chief of security, a massive man with a scarred neck, stepped forward, his hand already resting on the butt of his firearm.
"Take the nanny and my son to the private medical wing," Victor ordered, his eyes locked onto Serena like a hawk tracking its prey. "Call Dr. Evans. Tell him if my son loses mobility in that arm, I will personally skin him alive."
"Yes, Don Blackwood," Marco murmured, gently guiding a trembling Lily toward the rear corridor while another guard carried the baby. Lily looked back once, her heart hammering against her ribs as she saw Victor step closer to his fiancée.

"Victor, darling, you have to believe me!" Serena cried, her voice cracking with pure panic as two heavily armed guards moved to block the exits. "She's lying! She's trying to ruin our wedding! The Montigue family will not tolerate this kind of insult—"
"The Montigue family exists because I allow it to exist," Victor whispered, his voice slicing through her words like a razor blade. He reached out, his gloved fingers wrapping gently around Serena’s jaw, squeezing until her lips parted in pain. "You are in my house, Serena. And you have just spilled Blackwood blood on my floor. We are going to the study. And you are going to pray to whatever god you believe in that the nanny doesn't have proof."
