Chapter 4 - The Cellar Ledger

The air in the basement cellar of the Blackwood mansion was damp, smelling of old concrete, rusted iron, and the cold finality of the underground. Serena Montigue sat strapped to a heavy wooden chair in the center of the room, her elegant designer dress torn at the shoulder, her perfect makeup ruined by streaks of mascara and sweat.

The heavy steel door groaned open, and Victor stepped into the dim light. He wasn't carrying a weapon. He didn't need one. His presence alone was enough to make the air in the room feel heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

Behind him walked Marcus, carrying a small portable table and the black audio recorder Lily had provided.

"Victor, please!" Serena shrieked, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "This is madness! My father will start a gang war that will burn this city to the ground! You can't treat me like this!"

Victor walked over to the small table, leaning against it with his hands tucked into his pockets. He looked down at her as if she were a mathematical error on a spreadsheet—something to be corrected and deleted.

"Your father spent the last forty-five minutes on the phone with me, Serena," Victor said softly. His voice was calm, almost conversational, which made it ten times more terrifying.

"Do you know what he did when I played him the recording of you hitting my son? He apologized. He begged me not to include him in your execution. He realized that the alliance wasn't worth the complete annihilation of the Montigue family. He’s already packing his bags for Miami."

"No..." Serena whispered, her jaw dropping as her final safety net dissolved into the dark. "He wouldn't... he loves me..."

"He loves his survival more," Victor corrected. He reached down and pressed the play button on the recorder.

The sound of Serena’s own cruel voice filled the cellar, followed by the heartbreaking cries of baby Ethan. Victor watched her face as the recording played, his expression completely flat, his eyes two pieces of obsidian ice.

"I built this empire on three principles, Serena," Victor said, stepping closer until his shadow completely enveloped her.

"You violated all three," Victor whispered, his face inches from hers. "You struck my heir. You sold my cargo. And you thought you could use my name as a shield while you did it."

"Victor, I did it for us!" she lied, her voice rising in a desperate, frantic pitch. "The cargo... my father forced me to do it! He threatened me! And the boy... he was just so difficult, he never liked me—"

"He didn't like you because children can smell a monster from a mile away," Victor said, straightening up and turning his back to her. "Marcus."

"Yes, Don Victor?"

"Call the federal port authorities," Victor said, his voice ringing with a cold, calculated efficiency. "Give them the encryption keys to the Montigue shipping manifests. Let the government handle the financial destruction of their firm. As for Serena..."

He stopped at the door, looking back over his shoulder one last time.

"Transfer her to our private facility in Indiana," Victor commanded. "She will spend the next ten years working the assembly lines in the packing houses under an assumed name. No money. No family. No high heels. Let’s see how elegant she looks when she has to earn her bread like the 'nobodies' she despises."

"No! Victor, please! You can't do this to me!" Serena screamed, her voice dissolving into a frantic, ugly wail as the steel door slammed shut, locking her into the darkness forever.
