Chapter 5 - THE AMBUSH AT THE BALL

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sprawling ocean of gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and dangerous power.

Over four hundred guests—corrupt senators, federal judges, billionaire cartel financiers, and high-ranking captains from all five Chicago families—milled about the marble floor, sipping vintage champagne as a forty-piece orchestra played softly on the mezzanine.

When the heavy gilded doors of the ballroom swung open, a quiet wave of murmurs swept through the crowd.

Roman Costello entered the room.

He walked with the terrifying, absolute posture of an undisputed emperor, his arm wrapped possessively around Pamela’s waist, shielding her broad, voluptuous frame as they glided down the marble steps.

Beside them, dressed in adorable mini-tuxedos and a tiny lace dress, walked little Leo, Luca, and Maya, each held by elite Moretti guards, looking around the ballroom with bright, curious eyes.

"Is that... the Costello Don?" a senator whispered to his wife. "Who is that woman with him? She's stunning!"

"I heard she's a European heiress," a mob captain's wife gossiped behind her silk fan. "Look at the way he holds her! He hasn't looked at a woman like that since Isabella died!"

Pamela kept her head high, holding onto Roman's arm, feeling the warm, steady rhythm of his heart beneath his tuxedo jacket. Though her heart was hammering, the fierce, protective presence of the man beside her made her feel completely invincible.

Suddenly, the music stopped.

At the far end of the ballroom, sitting in a raised leather armchair surrounded by twenty heavily armed guards, sat Don Victor Vance—the gray-haired, ruthless patriarch of the Vance empire. Beside him stood Lady Valentina, wearing a blood-red dress, her eyes fixed on Pamela with pure, venomous hatred.

Don Victor stood up slowly, tapping his silver cane against the marble floor. The sharp CLICK echoed through the silent ballroom.

"Roman Costello!" Don Victor’s raspy, powerful voice boomed through the speakers. "You dare bring your children and your cheap street mistress into the High Council of the Five Families?!"

The entire ballroom went dead silent. Guests backed away from the center aisle, sensing the immediate, deadly confrontation.

Roman didn't flinch. He slowly led Pamela to the center of the room, stopping twenty feet from Don Victor, his silver eyes burning with lethal confidence.

"Watch your tongue, Victor," Roman said, his baritone voice carrying effortlessly to every corner of the room. "You are speaking to the future Duchess of the Costello Syndicate."

"Duchess?!" Valentina shrieked, stepping forward with a stack of printed paper documents in her hand. "She's no duchess, Roman! She's a liar! A fraud who manipulated her way into your house!"

Valentina turned to the four hundred guests, waving the papers in the air with a triumphant, wicked grin.

"I ran a background check on Pamela Hayes!" Valentina announced loudly. "Two years ago, she was admitted to St. Jude’s Hospital in South Chicago! She gave birth to three premature babies who died at birth! She's unstable! She used her fake grief to trick Roman’s motherless children into thinking she’s their mother!"

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Pamela felt the world sway beneath her feet. The painful, hidden secret of her deepest tragedy—the night her heart had been ripped out—was being dragged through the mud before four hundred laughing, judgmental eyes. Tears welled up in her hazel eyes, her chest heaving as she swallowed hard.

Valentina sneered, walking down the steps toward Pamela. "She's a broke, broken woman who couldn't even keep her own children alive, and now she—"

SLAP!

The sharp, crackling sound shattered the silence of the grand ballroom.

It wasn't Roman who had struck her.

Pamela stood tall, her broad shoulders squared, her eyes blazing with a feral, unstoppable rage. Valentina stumbled back, clutching her reddened cheek in absolute, horrified disbelief, her printed papers scattering across the marble floor.

"Do not... ever... speak about my babies," Pamela hissed, her voice shaking the high crystal chandeliers. "I carried them. I loved them. And I grieved them every single day of my life. I didn't trick these children—I loved them when you left them to cry in an empty house!"

The crowd went wild with breathless shock.

"You filthy maid!" Don Victor roared, reaching into his jacket for his firearm. "Guards! Kill her!"

CLACK! CLACK! CLACK!

Before the Vance guards could even draw their weapons, fifty Moretti tactical operators stepped out from behind the velvet balcony curtains, their heavy automatic rifles aimed directly at the heads of Victor Vance and his men.

"Move a single muscle, Victor," Roman’s voice thundered, drawing his silver Beretta and pressing the cold barrel directly against Don Victor’s forehead, "and I will paint this marble floor with your brains."

Victor stood frozen, his breath hitching in his throat as he felt the absolute, unyielding iron of Roman’s resolve.

"You broke the charter, Victor," Roman whispered, his silver eyes flashing with pure vengeance. "You sent mercenaries to my estate. You insulted my promised bride. And fourteen months ago... you ordered the hit on the car that killed your own daughter Isabella because she refused to give you control of the northern docks."

A massive gasp echoed across the entire room.

Valentina gasped, backing away from her father in horror. "Father... what? You... you killed Isabella?!"

"She was weak!" Victor shrieked, crazed and trapped. "She gave my territory to the Costellos!"

"And now, you have nothing," Roman said coldly.

Roman didn't pull the trigger. Instead, he pulled back his hand and struck Victor violently across the jaw with the heavy handle of his pistol, knocking the old crime boss unconscious onto the floor.

"Marco!" Roman commanded smoothly. "Hand Don Victor and Valentina over to the Federal Bureau. The bank ledgers we seized from their safe house will ensure they spend the rest of their natural lives in a federal supermax facility."

"Understood, Don Costello!" Marco shouted as forty guards swarmed the Vance team, dragging them away in chains.

The grand ballroom erupted into wild applause as the remaining bosses of the Five Families bowed their heads in deep, undisputed respect to Roman Costello.

Roman turned away from the crowd, ignoring the applause, and walked straight to Pamela. He reached out, pulling her broad, voluptuous frame tightly against his chest, burying his face in her dark auburn hair.

"It's over, my love," Roman whispered fiercely into her ear. "No one will ever hurt you again."

Pamela wrapped her arms around his neck, weeping tears of pure, overwhelming relief as little Leo, Luca, and Maya ran over, hugging their parents' legs under the glittering lights of the ballroom.
