Chapter 4 - THE DRESS AND THE DANGERS

Three weeks passed in a blur of laughter, warmth, and transformation.
Under Pamela’s loving care, the quiet, gloomy atmosphere of the Costello estate completely evaporated. The third floor, once a cold gallery of silent rooms, was now filled with the cheerful noise of three toddlers babbling, singing nursery rhymes, and chasing Pamela down the hallways.
Leo was the bold explorer, always trying to climb the furniture. Maya was the little princess who insisted on having Pamela braid her dark ringlets every morning. And Luca was the quiet thinker, who wouldn't sleep at night unless Pamela sang him the old lullaby her mother had taught her.
And then there was Roman.
The terrifying Don of Chicago seemed to change with every passing day. He stopped taking late-night business calls in his study, choosing instead to sit on the nursery carpet every evening, playing with building blocks alongside his children while watching Pamela with an increasingly intense, possessive devotion.
Every look he gave her across the dinner table felt like a physical touch. Every time his hand accidentally brushed hers while reaching for a baby bottle, Pamela felt a jolt of electricity that left her breathless.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Pamela stood in the grand walk-in closet of her private suite, folding a pile of tiny velvet sweaters.
The door opened, and two women walked in carrying three large garment bags made of black silk, followed personally by Roman.
"Roman? What is this?" Pamela asked, setting the sweaters down in confusion.
"A delivery," Roman said smoothly, gesturing to the women, who quickly unzipped the silk bags and hung the contents on the mahogany racks.
Pamela gasped, her eyes going wide.
Inside the bags were three breathtaking designer gowns. The first was a cascading sapphire-blue silk dress; the second, an off-the-shoulder emerald velvet gown; and the third, a stunning, fitted blush-pink lace gown that looked as though it had been woven from moonlight. Beside them sat three velvet boxes containing sparkling diamond jewelry and handmade leather heels.
"Roman... I can't accept this," Pamela stammered, backing up a step. "My salary is more than enough. I'm just the caregiver—"
"You are not 'just' anything in this house, Pamela," Roman interrupted firmly, taking a step toward her. He motioned for the stylists to leave, closing the closet door behind them.
He walked up to her, his towering height completely filling her field of vision. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a sleek, gold-embossed invitation card, and handed it to her.
Pamela looked down at the card.
The Annual Chicago Crime Syndicate Charity Gala. Hosted by the Five Families.
"Tonight is the autumn ball at the Drake Hotel," Roman explained, his baritone voice dropping into a intimate whisper. "Every major family, politician, and judge on the East Coast will be there. I am attending."
"Okay..." Pamela said softly, looking up into his dark eyes. "I can stay here and watch the kids with Mrs. Gable—"
"No," Roman said, reaching out to take both of her hands in his. His large, warm fingers wrapped tightly around hers, sending a wave of delicious heat through her body. "I want you beside me, Pamela. As my official guest."
Pamela’s heart did a sudden flip in her chest. "Roman, you heard what Valentina said. I don't belong in that world. I'm a waitress from South Chicago. Your allies... your enemies... they'll laugh at you for bringing me."
"Let them laugh," Roman sneered softly, his eyes flashing with a fierce, dangerous pride. "And then let them watch me tear down anyone who dares look at you with anything less than absolute respect."
He raised her hands to his lips, pressing a slow, deep kiss onto her knuckles, his warm lips burning into her skin.
"You have brought my children back to life, Pamela," Roman whispered against her skin. "You have brought me back to life. Tonight, I want the entire city to see the woman who owns my heart."
Pamela felt her breath catch in her throat. The intense, unyielding sincerity in his voice dissolved every last trace of her insecurity. She looked into the dark, fierce eyes of the man who had shielded her, valued her, and cherished her more in three weeks than anyone had in her entire life.
"Which dress do you want me to wear?" Pamela asked softly, a bright, beautiful smile breaking across her face.
Roman chuckled softly, his dark eyes trailing down her lush, voluptuous figure with undeniable heat.
"The emerald velvet," Roman murmured, leaning down until his lips brushed the shell of her ear. "It matches the fire in your eyes."
Two hours later, Pamela stood before the full-length mirror in her bedroom, staring at her reflection in absolute disbelief.
The emerald dress fit her broad, curvy body like a second skin. The soft velvet hugged her full bust, accentuated her narrow waist, and flared out gracefully over her hips, cascading down to the floor in rich, shimmering folds. Her auburn hair was styled in soft, glamorous Hollywood waves over one shoulder, and around her neck hung a simple, brilliant diamond drop necklace that Roman had personally clasped for her moments ago.
She didn't look like a broke waitress anymore. She looked like a queen.
A quiet knock sounded at the door.
Roman walked into the room, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo with an emerald-green silk pocket square that matched her gown perfectly. He stopped dead in his tracks, his silver eyes sweeping over her body with an intensity that made Pamela’s blood run hot.
"Breathtaking," Roman breathed, his voice rough with suppressed passion.
He walked over to her, offering his arm with effortless nobility. "Are you ready, my lady?"
Pamela placed her hand on his broad arm, feeling the solid, unyielding muscle beneath his suit. "With you? Always."
They descended the grand staircase together, where Marco stood waiting with the security team. As they walked toward the front doors, Marco leaned in close to Roman, his face pale and serious.
"Don Costello," Marco whispered, his voice laced with heavy concern. "We just received a intelligence tip from our contacts on the South Side. Don Victor Vance has hired foreign mercenaries. They know Miss Hayes is attending the gala tonight... and they plan to expose her past."
May you like
Roman’s jaw set into solid iron, his silver eyes darkening into a storm of absolute, lethal fury.
"Let them try," Roman whispered, his grip on Pamela's waist tightening protectively. "Tonight... the Vance family falls."
