Chapter 6 - The Table We Build

Two years later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the manicured rear lawns of the Mercer estate in Lake Forest. The cold, suffocating air that had once hung over the mansion was completely gone, replaced by the sound of laughter, running feet, and the sweet smell of baking pastries floating out from the kitchen windows.

Underneath the shade of a massive oak tree near the lakefront, a long wooden dining table had been set.

It wasn't made of fragile marble or expensive Italian glass—it was a sturdy, warm oak table that Adrian had personally commissioned from a local craftsman.

Sitting at the head of the table was Hannah, wearing a simple, gorgeous yellow sundress that complemented her glowing skin and full curves. Beside her sat eight-year-old Lily, her hair neatly braided, busily drawing a bright picture of a sunshine and four people standing hand-in-hand.

Beside Lily sat a small wooden highchair, where a ten-month-old baby boy with dark gray eyes and soft brown curls was happily smashing a piece of soft bread into his tray.

"Look, Mommy!" Lily beamed, holding up her drawing for Hannah to see. "I added little brother!"

Hannah leaned over, kissing Lily’s cheek warmly. "It's perfect, sweetheart. Put it right in the middle of the table."

Adrian walked out from the terrace carrying a large wooden tray loaded with fresh grilled steaks, sweet corn, and a massive bowl of homemade potato salad. He wore a simple linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up, looking younger, happier, and more at peace than he ever had in his entire life.

Behind him walked Arthur Mercer, holding a pitcher of fresh lemonade, chuckling as he watched his grandson make a mess with his bread.

"Dinner is served!" Adrian announced, setting the tray down at the center of the table.

He walked over to Hannah’s chair, leaning down to press a deep, tender kiss against her lips. Hannah smiled into the kiss, reaching up to rest her hand against his warm chest.

"You look beautiful today, Mrs. Mercer," Adrian whispered against her ear.

"And you look like a man who isn't stressing about business mergers anymore," Hannah teased softly, her brown eyes shining with deep love.

After Claire's death, Adrian had successfully completed the transition of Mercer Enterprises into a fully legitimate real estate and logistics firm. The old criminal ties were cut, the dangerous shadow lifted forever from their lives.

Arthur sat down at the foot of the table, pouring lemonade for everyone. "You know, Hannah... when my son brought you home three years ago, I thought he had lost his mind."

"I know, Arthur," Hannah smiled warmly at her father-in-law. "You told me I was fired."

"And it was the foolish decision of my life," Arthur admitted, raising his glass with a soft, genuine smile. "You didn't just save my son's heart. You saved this entire family."

Adrian sat down beside Hannah, taking her hand under the table, intertwining his fingers tightly with hers.

"I used to think that control was the only way to protect the people I love," Adrian said, looking around the table at his wife, his daughter, his son, and his father. "I built walls, I checked credentials, and I tried to force life into a neat, perfect box."

He looked at Hannah, his eyes shining with profound gratitude.

"Then a brave, beautiful woman walked in, crawled under a table with my daughter, and taught me that the best things in life are the ones you never saw coming."

Lily grinned, placing her drawing right next to Adrian’s plate. "And Hannah makes the best lemon cake in the whole world!"

Everyone laughed—a loud, warm, honest sound that echoed across the sunny lawn and drifted out over the blue waters of Lake Michigan.

The Mercer house was no longer a cold fortress built on fear. It was a home built on love, laughter, and a table where everyone, no matter who they were, had a place to sit.
